Just curious could it be done with html styles??

Don't think I am, that's the kind of thing I would notice. It would
be harder to type e-mails for a start.
1000 tests that take a total of 28 milliseconds (the difference
between your best and worst times) means that one of those tests is
taking 28 microseconds, or 1/36th of a millisecond.
