Oops, Kerry. You can play MPEG beautifully in DfW without an Xtra.
Assuming we're talking about 3rd-party Xtras here -- since Director's
QuickTime support comes via Xtras -- you can embed a Windows Media
Player ActiveX control in your app, for example. This uses ActiveX.x32,
which also ships with Director.

In fact, using this technique last year, I got far better video
performance than I ever did with QT in Director, in terms of streaming
and quality, both audio & video. A person who prefers Mac, such as
myself, says 'ouch' here.

Agreed, DirectMedia, OnStage et al are all worthy contenders.
