Hello.
Here's what I would do:

1) Order and install z/VM 5.3, if you don't already have z/VM running at
your site.
2) Pick a Linux for system Z distribution that meets your application
support needs. generally speaking, this will be either SuSE from Novell
(http://www.novell.com/partners/ibm/mainframe/) or Red Hat
(http://www.redhat.com/rhel/server/mainframe/). Both offer trial
versions of their distributions for you to install and test.
3) Read the IBM publication "z/VM V5R3.0 Getting Started with Linux on
System z9 and zSeries:, available online here:
http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/Shelves/hcsh2a90
4) become familiar with the Linux on System Z web site at
http://www.linuxvm.org/. It has a wealth of practical, hands on Linux
advice, how-tos, and technical documentation, all directly related to
running Linux on a mainframe; courtesy of Mark Post.
5) If you encounter problems, remember this list. we're a prettuy
friendly bunch of folks here, and don't mind offering a helping hand to
others....;-)

Good luck.
