Either with PAV, or as Ken suggested, use LVM striping to accomplish something 
similar.

It's not "a z/OS thing" any more.  Both z/VM and Linux can exploit it, 
providing you have paid for the hardware feature.

Another alternative, would be to use SCSI over FCP, and have multiple paths to 
your disk that way.  The built-in multipathing support in Linux would then be 
usable.  Unless you've got spare channel adapters you can "convert" from FICON 
to FCP, though, that's going to cost money.
