Ah ...  now that you say this I do recall going through the same with our
SAN folks as well..  argh.    I don't know enough about storage and SAN
fabrics to know if there is a way to 'prefill' without the channel being
logged in..  it did not sound like it, but I always wondered.

Sorry -  I guess it doesn't really help you..  as far as I know - you
cannot make use of any tool to import WWPN's so that they are used for NPIV
assignments on a new z box.  I'd love to be wrong about this though...
