I've used Office since 95, don't recall any problems. Although I have not
had the chance to load StarOffice or one of the other Linux "office" apps,
I understand from non-zealot Linux users that they are still lacking in
features. Office is "bloated"? No, not at all. Just has more in it. And
I totally disagree about Windows. Windows is as reliable as the hardware it
is installed on. If you buy poor quality hardware, in either, you will have
an unstable system. Buy a Dell with Windows and you will have a stable
system. Unfortunately for Linux, its GUI needs more work before it reaches
Windows' level of stability.

Actually, I was asking which products were superior to Microsoft. I take it
you meant none are superior than Linux.

Less expensive? Sure. Consumer application? You've got to be kidding.
Lack of software, much more complex operating system. You need to realize
that consumers don't care about the OS itself. They just want the apps that
use the operating system. And the majority of the apps for Linux require
you to understand the command line. Not so with Windows. Give a consumer
the choice between typing "tar -vxf filename" or knowing what rpm is and
sticking a CD in and clicking a button a couple of times and Linux will lose
every time. I do believe there is hope, but right now Linux is far behind.

Thanks for taking the time, but perhaps the time would have been better
devoted to understanding the subject yopurself before giving lessons to
others.

Not if you throw in the cost to retrain all the staff etc. If the economics
were so clear, it would have already happened., but in any real business
decision you take into account more than just raw hardware/software costs,
otherwise SUN would have been out of business years ago.

That, claire, is because youre an idiot. Why is it that youre the only

I have some 8-bit AST 6-Pack cards laying around Charlie.
They have 384k memory a serial/parallel/game port and even a real time

Sounds like a great match for Linux.

There is no such thing of course, as usual flatfish is on drugs.
I've seen messages like this from mail clients, and they always
say something like "mail spool in use, if this is in error please
remove lock file /tmp/.408-jjs"
This has happened when a network problem occurs during
a mail download - following the instructions seemed to clear
it up.

Haven't been around here long. What does "MTTF" stand for. And I have said
before, Linux is very reliable, until you put a GUI on it. Then it falls
far behind Windows in reliability.

I agree with you here. Word is a pain in the butt. Of course, I use it
regularly. Why? Nothing else out there.

Nasty mess? That's quite vague, isn't it?

Quite correct. I can administer all my W2K servers using a terminal window.
I like VNC for Linux also. And I agree, this functionality has been missing
far too long.
> There is virtually no interpolability between MS products and other

I looked up "interpolability". I don't think it is a word. Do you mean
portable? This is true for those other products as well. Microsoft often
has tools to convert those other products to its own format. Nothing stops
those other products from doing the same.
> Until recently, there was little interpolability between different MS

Again, I'm not sure what you are referring to in the word "interpolability".
The fact that NT could not read FAT 32 had little affect. Most used NT and
FAT 16. Not sure what you are getting at here.
> The example code provided by MS for DirectX is full of uneeded gotos.

I think you mean they were not shipped with development tools. Most
consumers are not programmers. I do like the fact that Linux comes with
developement suites. Very nice.

Well, obviously I disagree on both counts. Mac is fine, but they simply do
not have the software base. It is definitely improving however. Linux is
just too hard and consumers do not have the patience.

The GUI has nothing to do with the underlying OS. Linux is not a GUI, it
is
an OS. Agreed, the GUI needs more work before it can cope with the
population
of computer ileretate trolls which Micro$hite has dumped on us.

All they needed was an offsite secondary DNS. Most places either have
their ISP provide one or trade off with someone of similar capacity. Of
course that means you have to follow standards....
Still, they could have handled it themselves by parking their own server
at any of the thousands of places that rent internet co-location space and
bandwidth (rackspace, exodus, etc.) and a bundle of money could likely
have one of those up in an afternoon. I think the real lack here is
expertise. Why would anyone who understands the standards for
network interoperability be working for Microsoft? It would just
be to painful to endure.

Don't have to believe it. I know it. I use both quite regularly.
