Exactly. (This is how NT for MIPS/ NT for PPC, AND NT for Alpha all existed
simultaneously for NT for x86). However, you are forgetting several things.
Itanium (IA-64) is NOT intended for personal (or even many business)
desktops. It is intended primarily for scientific workstations and
heavy-duty servers (the current XEON/UNIX market). Hence, VERY few
workstations will running Whistler Pro on Itanium.
SledgeHammer (AMD's 64-bit x86 offering) is aimed at the same market; hence,
it won't be seeing much in the way of Whistler Pro either.
In case you can't remember, XEON has been a slow seller outside Intel's
intended market for it. Itanium will be living in the same market (Itanium
is intended as Xeon's replacement).

Hi all,
Linux Weekly News (daily updates) is reporting this new small piece of work
by Microsoft about Linux. It appears Microsoft can no longer concentrate on
the technical capabilities of Linux so it's fantasy reporting from here on.
Here's the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/serverappliance/kempin.asp
I don't want to spoil the surprise. Suffice to say that Windows is far
better advocated in this forum than by Microsoft.
Enjoy,

Both Suse and Yellowdog support Linux for powerpc based RS/6000s. Linux
is up and running on Power4, but I'm not sure of the status - it may
still bein beta. Suse will be supporting Power4 and I believe Redhat has
also committed support.

Ok, I know it's late and my eyes are getting tired, but does anyone see
anything wrong with this statement from Microsoft:
"PC users still make up less than 10% of the total world population of 500
million people".
Did they just say there are only 500 million people in the world?
Or how about this:
"Linux is simply a fad that has been generated by the media and is destined to
fall by the wayside in time. Windows 2000 will gradually overtake the Linux
share in the server market."
Did they just admit that Linux currently has a larger share of the server
market that Windows 2000? After all, how can you overtake if you are
already ahead?

9x is about extending the monopoly to include browsers or are you in
denial of the Findings of Fact ?
95 looked and acted completely different than Win 3.1
I recall lots of people complaining about needing to adjust. Was
that not "training" ?
Then with 98 we have a different behavior, not so drastic this time.
More lack of "training" ?
Now comes W2K and Whistler, more changes.
That "retraining" boogeyman is just the FUD I said it was.

FYI. When you do type "make" on the Windows NT source tree, it takes almost
38 hours for it to complete on a 4-way 400 Mhz PII System, as opposed to
about 5 minutes on Linux. Linux is not Doomed!!!!!! -- Jeff Merkey

It takes 2 minutes works to turn it to 3.1 lookalike.

9x is all about not forcing the clients to lose all their olds application
(16 bits ones) and making smooth transfer to 32 bit.
NT was unsuitable for the time, because a lot of the applications that
people used were incompatible with it.

I know that it's not going be very popular until the second or third IA-64
generation.
