Unless you're an MCSE.

In that case, it takes lots and lots and lots of naval gazing.

How much you wanna bet that they formatted the drives and re-installed

They'll come down on your side of it and lay down an edict against KDE
and Gnome, Kylie. The Christian Coalition, being a conformist,
AntiThought organization, is as pro redmond as they come. It is no
coincidence that humanity was cast out from Eden for eating of the tree

The same here. I have never bought a pre-fab computer.
Everything is selected to run any OS. Assembling a computer
requires just a phillips screw driver. My cats can almost do
it but their claws get stuck on the ribbon cables. The useful
life of a hand picked computer is quite long too. My 486
50/32meg, 9 years old, is still a web and samba server. It
also runs two printers and a dial in modem. It is on its third
hard disk and second monitor but everything else is
original. It probably has about 60,000 hours on it and has
spent the last three years on all the time (barring power
failures). The CPU fan broke years ago. Obviously it was not
necessary.

I don't see replacing it anytime soon. My current P3
500/512meg is all I will need for a long time. Linux does not
impose endless upgrade cycles. In fact, I really did not need
to get it because my P2 300/256meg was very adequate. But I am
making good money and I can deduct money spent on the
computers from my huge Canadian tax bill. (I laugh at
Americans that think their taxes are too high. We Canadians
are the highest taxed people in the world. We have something
worst than Demoncrooks, we have Looterals (Liberals)) I like
Demoncrooks and I am going to use it.

If ++++flatfish would like, we could help him/her select the
components for a new computer. You don't even have to be a
MCSE to assemble a computer. All my components work with all
operating systems right out of the box, even Windows. I have
never had a difficult install, even in the bad old days of dos
and a separate windows. It is so easy to make a computer, I
can't see why people buy a pre-fab and get stuck with crap. I
have seen HPs with a one inch bow in their motherboards, IBM's
that were DOA and some cheap noname klones that will not work
without the original OEM disk. You will never find a driver
(Windows or Linux) on the net with one of these even if you
could even guess at what kind of junk was in it.

Any serious computer professional would take the couple hours
of time and build their own computer with personally selected
components. After all, we should know how to do this. Very
basic information even covered in a MCSE program. I am sure
the the teacher's of the MCSE program encourage their students
to use good hardware whenever possible. I don't think
datacenter is going to run very well on a $650 MegaMart
special.

My big project this year is to get everything into a rack and
then jam it into my closet. My computer room is strewn with
wires. 4 monitors and 2 printers take up a chunk of space
too. The desk is 3 feet from the wall so that I can get at the
wires at the back of my computers. No more tower cases, just
rack mounts. Next video device will be a flatscreen, still the
nice ones are over $2500 CDN. If I spent $2500 on one, it
would be selling for $500 the next day. I can wait.

I have 4 operational computers (all built be me), 3 Linux and
1 Windows. The Windows computer is here because I have Window
centric clients. The Windows computer is off most of the time.
I am currently developing in Perl and C. Hence, Windows has
not been fired up for a few months. Hope it does fire up when
I need it. Got a ghost image because I have been burned many
times before. Its not too bad installing the OS, its
everything else. Now I can do the works in a few minutes, go
away for lunch, and it is done when I get back. The Linux
computers have never required a re-install.

I do upgrades by bulldozing and installing the new
distribution on a pristine hard disk. I am an application
developer not an admin so I don't have a compelling desire to
upgrade kernels and drivers. I will compile a kernel to make
sure it is matched for the CPU and it has exactly what I need.
Linux is an application programmers dream. So many tools,
libraries, source code examples and ways to automate
repetitive tasks. To get the equivalent in Windows would cost
$20,000 at least. Oh, I forgot about the databases. Free with
Linux and how much for Windows? As a Windows developer, you
would have to join a secret order called MCSD just to get all
the tips and tricks you need to know. With Linux, everything
is in the open and the Linux crowd are eager to share their
technical expertise.

I think $530 a copy for the workstation for Whistler should
do the trick.

I don't think we need a bench test.

Windows has just priced itself completely out of the computer
market.

Corporations which continue to plan their operations around
Windows will face increasing costs they have to make up
as their competitors will be using cheaper alternatives
like Linux.

The Microsoft user base will deteriorate.
Combined with the pressure from Linux development,
Microsofts OS will continue to climb in price with
each release.

Microsoft will start to feel the effects of cash
starvation competing with a > 250,000 GPL software
development force.

Microsoft will loose it's domination of the world
markets by 2005.

By 2010, if Microsoft hasn't managed to come up
with a Linux retrofit for it's office products,
Microsoft will face bankruptcy.

That's the future of Microsoft.

And there *IS* no going back...

This is why they are beginning to take an interest
in Linux and the development/porting of applications
from Microsoft corp to Linux platforms.

Nonsense. You do things YOUR way by quoting Microsoft.com
I'll do things my way.

It sickens me that an advocate would bother with such bullshit.
But for once, I will appologize.

The problem with giving them credibility by referencing *their*
website sickens me Adam.

Ah, no it doesn't.

The certification is hardware and software both.
That is the rules.

Actually, Charlie destroyed his credibility long ago. Almost every word
he posts is ill-informed, misleading, or just plain wrong. Personally,
as a Linux user, I have typically found his posts embarassing. However, I
had not yet killfiled him, just for the occasional chuckle-factor.

Lately, his posting style has taken a turn for the nasty. Combine that
with his typical cluelessness and you end up with the kind of pitifully
misguided flames like the one in this thread against you.

It's definately not worth it anymore. Into Mr. Killfile he goes...
