No, no, that won't do.

You're supposed to argue that you don't even have a twin,
let alone one that was born in Siam...and that furthermore,
Siam no longer exists.

But that's not their aim, Charlie. The goal is to prevent what might be
considered the opposite, and might be considered by many to seem
reasonable, and is (or was) considered by some to be almost necessary,
required, and inevitable: an act of Congress making ALL software
developed with tax-payer money GPL.

Like I said; just the opposite. The question is: would the law be
grandfathered? That seems impossible and wrong, but so does Microsoft's
premise.

>There is nothing to stop those private vendors from using Linux.

To be frank, I think FreeBSD might be pretty common, too.

Despite Cisco's fervent wishes, they have always had hundreds of

No, it doesn't. Or maybe it does.

A real person, we're told, goes through predictable phases when dealing
with difficult facts. IIRC, the first was denial, and the second is
anger.

I think we're entering the anger phase. Does anyone know what comes
next?

>And if your a manager who's proposed Microsoft for your business,
>I think you should retire. You've just become useless to our

You underestimate the necessity of dealing with the reality of a
monopoly. Nevertheless, I think anybody involved in IT who is not
comfortable with Linux (which, happily, excludes anyone who's ever used
any Unix) had better start learning it, whether they like it or not.

They're. Sorry.

Yes, but they have an excellent chance, I'm afraid, of stopping
taxpayer-funded development of GPL software. Which is wrong; all
tax-payer funded development of software should automatically be GPL.

Face it, Charlie; you're a socialist. And I say that with the greatest
admiration. I wish I had the faith in human nature it takes to be a
socialist. Oddly enough, though, I _do not_ wish I had the faith in
human nature it takes to be a libertarian; anarchists don't make good
politicians.

Why would any non-Microsoft employee be "worried" by Mafia$oft going
out of business....

Programmers will no longer have to shell out $5,000 every couple of years
to maintain certification.

MCSE's will not longer have to shell out $thousands every couple of years
to maintain certification.

Businessmen will no longer have to shell out $MILLIONS every couple of
years on pointless bloatware upgrades....followed by $MILLION hardware
upgrades, becuase the bloatware upgrade makes the 2-year old hardware
slow to a crawl.

Oh yeah...I forgot....idiots like you who present themselves as "administrators"
because they can point->drool->click when presented with microsoft blue...

bigger kernels compatible with increasing amounts of hardware. (still waiting
for /dev/kitchen-sink though)

I've found that sometimes an old kernel worked fine but a newer doesn't with
obscure devices, at least not so easally. If you can, you could pull out your
old distro and get the kernel source and remake the old kernel if it's already
nuked from the upgrade.

To avoid a problem like this in the future, you could look around in the other
Linux newsgroups for what others use and with what kernels and hardware. If
you just bought a new computer and recycling parts, sometimes a gadget may
work with one motherboard but not another when using Linux.

Some ancient history here: A long time ago I had a Wearnes CD drive and a 486
with a VESA local bus type motherboard. I was never able to make it work...
until I bought a computer later with a PCI motherboard. Worked perfect with
the same distro, same kernel, same install process, etc. I was dumbfounded.

For best results with hardware, look for standardised stuff and when possible
try to avoid obscure hardware. Don't help you now with the sound card, but
could save grief later.

If you are using Loadlin, save that dir from that filesystem then partition a
10M partition as bootable DOS and replace the Loadlin upon using Win 98's DOS
to format it, then with the other partition, make it ext2.

To do this, have a Linux boot disk handy of course, but make a DOS boot disk
with format and its fdisk, and the Loadlin dir with Loadlin, the one-liner
script, and kernel file. (the Linux boot disk can be a hacked install disk
or a Loadlin boot disk) With the disks, reboot, do up the hard drive in
question with both fdisks, and format the DOS partition to set up Loadlin, and
set it back up, with the one-liner script as the autoexec script.

While in Linux, you can leave that little partition to port stuff if ever
needed.
