There are LOTS of bacteria which produce hydrocarbons as a waste product.

All it we need to do is cultivate them, just like we do chickens
for their eggs.

It seems that the demands of Uni mean the end of my "No Windows" policy.
I still want to maintain my dignity, however, so I'd like to try out
VMWare or Win4Lin.
What would I find better, Win4Lin running '98 (advantage of speed), or
something like VMWare (advantage of more 'robust' MS OS's).

Here's my way of looking at it.

Windows users are like millionaires who, for whatever reason,
CHOOSE to live in a flop house over run with drug dealers from
rival factions.

When they come up injured after the latest drive-by shooting,
all i can say is: "So, are you going to continue to stay where
you are, or have you finally seen the light and realized that
the only way to security is to leave that shit behind and
move to Unix/Linux-land"

Yes, there are Linux packages for the Sparc processors. Considering that
this one is a 64 bit one, and $995, I looked at suns web site and found that
gcc comes with it as well as jdk1.3. Star Office 5.2 is bundled in.
Seems to be better than microsofts deal... all I'd need then is just buy a
PS2 to handle the games. I'm looking at it as a hobby machine that will
stay stable. Solaris, at least on a billy -box, is slower than linux by
quite a bit.
But it does offer one the opportunity to study the o/s. One can download
all of their documentation and print it, or just read it on line,(which is
included). For this price its better than the itanium. I've read a few
newsgroups regarding the intel processor line. one engineer said that intel
made a bad design decision and that the p4 is actually hobbled by this
decision. A test was done using business software that had shown the pIII
to be faster than the p4 in these areas. Said it had something to do with
faulty branch predictions.
The only downside I see is if one wanted to get Suns C++ compiler... its
$2000, and not worth it.
Thats why I snarfed around and managed to get a Vax 4000. Joined Deccus for
$40, got a vms license for $40, and got vax fortran, basic, pascal, C, and
Cobol. Came with CDE by Dec with all the libraries. From my old days as a
sysadmin for the Navy Dept. the vms libraries and runtime libraries work as
advertised. There were never any surprises about what I wanted it to do and
have always gotten what I programmed to work without
extensive research. Sad part may be that the vax days are waning. I sure
enjoyed using their machines.

Cheers.

Now one can go to sun.com and download solaris 8 for intel for free.
Better have a fast connection tho! Sun uses an application builder program
thats very similar to mickeysoft, where one just picks and chooses what one
wants in their gui. After that you have to program the core of the program
like everybody else has to. I'm beginning to think that sun is getting a
little
scared about linux.
