btw, you can also get the source code to SUN Solaris, and modify it. You
have no obligation to submit the changes, however, just because the source
is open, it doesn't give you the right to create your own distro. You need
to obtain a special license to do that. Thus, Solaris could be considered,
in theory, "open source".

Just as a follow up the Chad's claims regarding the patching process. What
error message is being output'ed? because, there is an error code which
corresponds to a meaning, and in most cases, when the error does occur, it
is simply saying that, that particular patch has already been applied.
As for Solaris, it is an awsome OS, however, if they added SoundBlaster
Live! support, and Real Player was ported, Solaris would be my default
desktop on the PeeCee.

And I spot something I don't believe is true and I say something about
it.
What's wrong with that? How does that make me on Linux side necessarily?
Check my header.. you'll see I don't use Linux. It's just a preference I
enjoy.
But I'd like to see a claim from you that may question some of MS stuff
once in a while to balance out your arguments. Ayende does and I like
the balance that he has.

First of all Chad, give up Solaris, because obviously you donot have the
intellectual capacity to use an OS that is so easy a 10 year old can use.
What error message is being output'ed? because, there is an error code which
corresponds to a meaning, and in most cases, when the error does occur, it
is simply saying that, that particular patch has already been applied.
Compared to Microsoft's msgbox-a-thon. Also, did you take the time to look
at the patch log in the /var directory?
Also, you failed to tell what release? Solaris 2.6? Solaris 7? Solaris 8?
what release date? 10/00? 06/00? what? you have absolutely no SUN experience
what so ever. Stick to Windows machines, designed for people like you, with
the intellectual capacity of a fish.

fair enough - my father's BJC2000 only cost 10ukpounds and it is used
mostly for text printing anyway - until recently he was using an HP 500C so
the canon was only bought to save money on ink ( canon compatible carts
cost as little as a tenth of the price of HP ones). It's nowhere near as
good as my epson 640 for photos (it's only 600dpi compared with the epson's
1440dpi ) but it does what he wants it for and it easily beats the hp's
300dpi.

I could get a cable modem with unlimited broadband access for about
30ukpounds per month but can't really justify the cost right now ( my
current ISP cost 20ukpunds for a year's unlimited use but I only have a
couple of months left).
My home is not in the right area to get ADSL yet though - annoyingly it is
available a couple of streets away but it costs around 40 to 50 ukpounds
per month.
My previous employer had ISDN - with call costs they were paying about 250
ukpounds per month ( far higher than it could have cost for ADSL but we
weren't in the right area to get it).

If *you* say something is untrue, *you* have to prove your claim, because

Last time I looked at the tutorial site it wasn't finished. So I went
out and purchased the book "CORE JAVA 2" Volume 1 - Fundamentals by Cay
S. Horstmann & Gary Cornell.
ISBN 0-13-089468-0
Comes with the Windows version of jdk 1.3 and Forte Community edition of
Suns IDE.
Plenty of other 3rd party tools are on the cd-rom as well.

I gave up because of the same situation, and also, because when I selected
multiple messages for deletion (when accessing via Outlook), the server
reponds saying "invalid command". Maybe Microsoft should get their act

tangents such as dot.net and other rectum plucked ideas.

Why do Microsoft astroturfers spend so much time doing installs?
I only ever install linux once, and it stays installed. I appreciate
that in windows you need to reinstall and reboot for all manner of
reasons, but that's just not necessary in linux. Can someone explain
this to the turfers?
