I never used m4 to produce the required sendmail.cf-file.

Remember to start sendmail like this: /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -os
(to disable timed delivery)
Use 'sendmail -q -v' via crontab to deliver on interval.
Set HoldExpensive=True
Only set the SMTP-mailers expensive (add flag 'e').
If it's an internal mail-server, disable relay/spam control.
I've had no use for a smarthost to do this effectivly.
