HOW TO SETUP A NAMESERVER THAT USES
YOUR ISP'S NAMESERVER
1. Install the caching-nameserver rpm and the bind
rpms it requires.
2. Edit /etc/resolv.conf to contain the line
nameserver 127.0.0.1
3. Edit /etc/named.conf. Add the lines similar to:
forward only;
forwarders {
200.300.400.500; //your isp's pri nameserver
200.300.400.501; //your isp's sec nameserver
200.300.400.500; //your isp's pri nameserver
200.300.400.501; //your isp's sec nameserver
};
Why do I repeat each nameserver? To lengthen the time that
domain requests will retry, to give your v.90 modem time to
connect before domain requests fail.
4. Add lines to /etc/hosts for every machine on your local
network, and for the local and remote IP numbers you give
diald to use for SLIP. This keeps your nameserver from
asking your ISP about them. Your phone will not dial quite as often.
