Right, I was looking at the old config file - thought that had been
cleaned up when I installed the updated packages. One thing that may not
be entirely clear from the description: these go inside the
options {
...stuff...
};
section of the config file.

The alternate approach is to make your nameserver authoritative for all
the local machines. That has the advantage of making one central table
supply nameservice for all names, both local and remote. Otherwise you
may have to put all machines into the hosts files on each machine, and
update each of them if you add another box. Whether this is worth the
trouble of dealing with the somewhat unfriendly syntax of the tables will
vary.
