This is incorrect on the face of it and I can't tell you why they did this.

PPP Compression Control Protocol 26 is deflate.  This is per RFC1979 and the
ppp numbers maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
[http://www.iana.org follow the links for port numbers til you get one for
ppp number assignments.  it used to point to
http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/ppp-numbers but that info may
be out of date so check the official reference.]

In Linux this means that ppp-compress-26 refers to module ppp_deflate.

PPP Compression Control Protocol 24 is actually not ppp_deflate but it was
listed that way in the preliminary specs so the deflate module is still
specified in order to properly connect to old servers that were set up
during the preliminary spec days.
