Pentium 90? Not so young ;-) Linux is very helpful in recycling old
machines...

Here I don't use DHCP, every client machine on the network has a static
(non-routable, 192.168.1.x) IP address and defines its default gateway being
the Linux server at 192.168.1.1. The server implements IP masquerade to
allow transparent access to the Internet from the client machines.

Do you have the same kind of setup, or do you use routable IP addresses for
your clients? Masquerade looks as probably being the cause of the loss of
the first packets sent over the diald link.

Also, does your ISP provide you with permanent remote and local IP adresses
for the PPP link on your Linux box? Here, both local and remote IP addresses
are dynamically defined when connecting to the ISP.

My local DNS works OK and didn't cause any problems to set up.

Same here.

There is no need for using the ISP nameservers, as my local named takes care
of finding any wanted address by itself (using its root.hints file). So I
don't use the ISP nameservers at all...

Best regards.
