While it's bad form to follow up to one's own posting, I should report
that I discovered if I replace the second 3c589 with a motorolla mariner
(uses SMC driver) that the box works just fine as desired. Looks like
with this combination, you cannot use the same driver for the two cards.

I am quite happy with my BT-958 KT. I have two UW SCSI drives on a UW cable,
and have a ZIP and Plextor CD on a narrow cable (which is actually wider :-).

Check out .http://www.tdl.com/~netex/controllers/controllers.html

They used to recommend the BT-958 for "serious" SCSI, but now that U2W
controllers are out, they take the highest ground.

Date: 23 Dec 1998 16:30:45 PST

Hi all -
How does one report a bug in the kernel? or put another way,
to whom does one report a bug?

Here's the deal -
The new IDE/ATAPI Zip drive has cylinders/heads/sectors CHS
of 32/64/96 but this is what the bootup partition check reports;

hdd: 98304kB, 32/64/96 CHS, 4096 kBps, 512 sector size, 2941 rpm

As you can see, the numbers for sectors/cylinders are reversed.
I tried to change this in fdisk and also by adding an append to
LILO, but when I rebooted, it was detected the old way.

Can anybody help?

Subject: modules, noyau, configuration et compilation
Date: Thu, 24 Dec 1998 00:17:51 +0100

Bonjour à tous, j'ai deux questions de la plus haute importance

Question n1
===========

kernel
les charge systematiquement?????????????

Question n2
===========

l'on
ait des défauts de configurations???????????????

en bref, merci de votre aide précieuse, n'hesitez pas à rajouter des
détails,
il vaut mieux être clair.

En bref, quelqu'un sait il une bonne adresse pour de la doc sur la
compilation
du noyau ET de ses modules?,

Merci

Christophe Michel

Subject: Ditto MAX, ftape, performance
Date: Wed, 23 Dec 1998 19:44:10 -0600

Hello,

Has anyone been successful in setting up ftape with the Ditto Max (Pro)
tape drive?

I can get it to "work", but have two problems...

1) I/O errors on read. I suspect a configuration problem since the
errors always occur at the same point even when different tapes are
used. Also, the same tapes read and verify OK under W98.

2) Performance. The drive never gets into streaming mode. It
starts/stops continuously ("stutters") about once a second as the tape
is written to or read from. Same behavior using tar or taper. When using
taper, it reports 0.7 MB/sec for a 15MB backup. The same tape does
18MB/s (uncompressed) in Windows.

When using tar (with the -v option) a long list of files goes by very
quickly then stops for a while. This repeats -- quick list of several
files then stop for a while. This "frequency" doesn't seem related to
the faster "stutter" but the read error mentioned above always comes at
the point where the file list first stopped when writing. I therefore
suspect the two problems are related.

I read the ftape FAQ and followed the advice it gave for improving
performance but it didn't help. This involved experimenting with setting
different block sizes and DMA buffer counts.

One other thing. In windows there is a way to specify the speed of the
accelerator card (1, 2, 4, or "automatic" megabits/sec). I can't find a
way to specify this with ftape, mt, ftmt, or taper.

(Redhat 5,1, intel 686): I have now managed to filter out modelines
for my own system by help of `X -probeonly' (described in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.Config) on draft XF86Configs. The
drafts were produced with Xconfigurator. Your problem seems, however,
to be far more complicated than mine, I had the manual for my monitor,
but lacked some info about my Matrox card. And I was modifying a

Copy the tulip.c to the /usr/src/linux/drivers/net directory. cp tulip.c
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/ or you can use mv which is move, same as it is in
dos.
from the /usr/src/linux directory you should be able to recompile your kernel
with the new file. Here is a link to a how-to that explains how to do that.
