Hi. i do apologize if my message sounds a bit too long but at least
you all will be able to figure out the sticky problem I'm stuck with
and may even know how to help me out of it. I currently am running
Windows 98 on one hard disk. However, since it is 7.5 GB and it's
32-bit, Linux won't recognize it when I first install Linux. At least
that's what I have been told and eventually found out. Besides, sure I
can download 500 MB in 2 hrs without any trouble via my cable modem,
but I would still need to copy it to a CD-R or CD-RW disc or something
and I'm not gonna pay $200 - $400 for CD-R/RW (in case you all wanted
to know why I would not prefer to copy to a storage device and then
install). I'm not sure if Linux will do it off my zip disks if I copy
linux to 6 zip discs. In any case, these wonderful people keep on
changing the versions of RH Linux. Therefore having got fed up with
it, I looked in the book which talked about RH Linux and how to
install. Well, I had versions 3 and 4 of RH but since some of my
crucial hardware at that time could not be recognized I abandoned RH
until I finally found out that if I had a direct connection with
Cox@home just like corporations and universities that have a direct
connection with their T1, T3, OC-3, etc... server, then you don't even
have to download RH linux. All you really have to download are the
boot.img and supp.img files and transfer them to two blank but
formatted 3.5" high density disks. So I did just that and booted up my
machine and when I got to the installation method option, I chose ftp
method. When I got to the ethernet card question, I 3c509 driver. By
the way, I still have the 3c509b PnP 16-bit Ethernet adaptor which I
obtained when I used to attend another university. Rather than sell
it, I kept it for something like a cable modem. In fact that same
ethernet card I had was part of the requirements for my cable modem
installation. Anyway, RH Linux never in the past had any trouble
recognizing my ethernet card. The only trouble was recognizing my
video cards,my parallel port zip drive, and my higher capacity hard
drive. here, in 5.2 that was not the problem. however, when I got to
the options of DHCP, BOOTP, and Static Address, I chose the Static
option and filled in my fields correctly. However, I got an error
message saying unable to connect to host. I fully verified the ftp
site address and typed it correctly. So I then went back and tried the
other two options only to get the "no response" error message from
bootp and dhcp. So the question still remains, isn't it possible to
install via ftp with cox@home and if so, how and what configurations
are to be made during installation?

P.S:
PLEASE DO NO TELL ME TO USE ANOTHER VERSION OF UNIX SINCE I KINDA AM
USED TO RH LINUX. ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME HOW TO PARTITION MY HARD
DRIVE SINCE MY 75. GB HARD DRIVE IS NEARLY FILLED UP. I PLAN TO
INSTALL REDHAT LINUX 5.2 TO MY OLDER 730 MB HARD DRIVE SO PLEASE DO
NOT BRING IN 7.5 GB INTO THE PICTURE UNLESS YOU ARE GONNA GIVE ME A
FREE CD-RW DRIVE FIRST !!! ALL I AM ASKING IS THAT YOU GIVE ME A
SOLUTION FOR THE PROBLEM I GOT. DO NOT GIVE ME IRRELEVANT BULLSH**
SUCH AS TELLING ME TO PARTITION MY OTHER HARD DRIVE. I WILL CONTINUE
TO POST THIS MESSAGE UNTIL SOMEONE HELPS ME FIX THIS PROBLEM !!!

Please post a reply to this message. I've had to switch ISPs in the
past due to people spamming and framing my acount(s).

Subject: Damaged ext2 filesystem
Date: 30 Dec 1998 21:46:23 GMT

Hello!

I'm using Linux 2.0.36 on my computer (Intel Pentium Advanced/ML motherboard,
133 MHz). As I opened my computer earlier today, Linux said something about
missing hard drives. I rebooted and found out that my motherboard did not
find two of my IDE hard drives (in IDE 1) anymore. So I turned off the
computer, and cleared BIOS memory by jumper. BIOS found now these hard drives
and so did Linux too. Linux started to check all drives and reported the
following message:
 e2fsck 1.04, 16-May-96 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
e2fsck: Filesystem revision too high while trying to open /dev/hda3
Get a newer version of e2fsck!

This /dev/hda3 was a properly working ext2-filesystem, and the same e2fsck
could handle it correctly before. Now the problem is: How can I recover data
from this damaged partition (if the data still exists there)? It contains some
very important information which I have not backuped anywhere. I know very
little about ext2 filesystem myself, so I have done nothing to it yet. If it
helps, the /dev/hda-hard drive is Seagate 39140A (9 GB Medalist Pro),
/dev/hda3-partition was a 1024 MB primary partition and about half of it empty
space.

Please respond to this newsgroup and to my e-mail address (remove NOSPAM.),
beacuse my news server does not always show all the articles in newsgroups.

Why don't you give me a free CD-R drive first and then I will do all
that backup stuff. Don't even ask me to use any other drive because
they all suck and their cartridges are a hell or a lot more expensive
than that of a CD-R disc.

I am using Red Hat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36 with ls-120. Everything works fine.
No compiling necessary.

Mine is IDE, installed as secondary master, making it /dev/hdc.

I might add that this is my SECOND ls-120, as the first died. (I bought
insurance on the second one). I also hear that Sony is about to unveil
a 200 MB super floppy that is much faster (Hi-FD).

Good luck.

This method will help as far as installing goes, but its godawful
advice.

Formatting your drive as FAT16 in 2Gb partitions means every single
one byte file takes up 32k of disk space. Perhaps you enjoy being
unable to copy 300Mb of data to a drive that supposedly has 500Mb
free, but I hate it.

I dont know about RedHat 5.2, but Slackware 3.6 supports FAT32 without
any hassle off the bootdisks. If necessary, we could chuck the kernel
from Slack 3.6 on a RedHat bootdisk and see what happens...

After reading the article you replied to I decided to have a go
over-clocking my AMD K6-2 to 4 x 95 MHz. My machine recognised it as a
AMD 266 then corrupted the screen, not allowing me to boot. I thought
'what the hell' and tried re-instating the MB speed to 100 MHz. I
switched on to be greeted with the usual AMD message, but this time
showing a 400 MHz CPU and my system booted perfectly. The BogoMips
rating is 801.18 and Linux booted perfectly. I have been using it for a
couple of hours with no errors, and Windows NT also boots and runs
perfectly.

Naturally I will not be surprised if I experience system crashes,
freezes etc., but so far (touch wood) everything is well. My machine
stays on overnight so tomorrow morning will tell . . .

Take care.

Winmodems may be good enough for most people now, but they might
regret buying one if they later try to upgrade to NT and then find
that the WinModem is not supported.

That's bull, since my 266 MHz AMD K6-2 works quite nicely in my Socket 7
mainboard here (Gigabyte 586-ATX2). It SHOULD work with a clock
multiplier set to the appropriate value. (Mine is at 4x 66 MHz)
It is definately better to check with your mainboard manufacturer, but
with a correct bios most TX based mobo's should work.

Subject: AWE64 or PCI128?

Hello Everybody,
I am looking to buy a new sound card, either an AWE64 or PCI128. I saw
in snconfig that the AWE64 is supported, but I am wondering if it is
easy to setup the PCI128?

Tim
