Yeah, I've got RH5.2 on my Gateway G6-450. There's nothing really unique
about my Gateway system as far as Linux is concerned. Any Linux of the
same vintage as RH5.2 will have a minor problem with installation on any
large hard drive.
The wheel mouse shipped with my system is a standard MS Intellimouse PS/2
which isn't well supported by RH5.2, but there's a free package on the web
("imwheel") which makes it run perfectly, wheel and all.
I never had a problem with X.
The anti-virus in my BIOS came disabled from the factory so I can't speak to
that.
The major annoyance I had with the GW system is that it wasn't immediately
clear what the equivalent retail versions of all its peripherals were, but
Linux
seemed to detect most of them by itself. And then of course there's the
infamous
and ubiquitous Winmodem, not unique to GW, which can't be made to run under
Linux.

Subject: 3Com Etherlink 3C900B-TPO not a recognized PCI device
Date: 2 Apr 1999 00:46:57 GMT
I've just installed a 3Com EtherLink XL PCI card (3C900B-TPO). When
I boot up or attempt to load the 3c59x module I get the following
message:
Unknown 3Com PCI ethernet adapter type 9004 detected: not configured
I also was directed towards include/linux/pci.h where the author asks
that people report unknown devices, but asks that recent linux
releases be checked to see if it has been added. Does this mean to
just plain get the pci.h from the latest release?
When I look in pci.h I can see that there is a define for a
3C900TPO (0x9000) but not for 3C900BTPO (which looks like it should
be 0x9004). Can I just add this line, rebuild the kernel and have the
device be recognized?
This is the card currently supplied with the US West DSL hardware,
so I'm sure this will get a lot of "hits" in the near future.
Thanks for the help,
Bill Cripe

No, not a ][+, not a //e, not a //c. . .just a ][!

Good reply on the Y2K, not expecting the systems of those days to last was
not only good foresight, it was true. Seems the new generations of os and
software thought the same, as it is 1999, and microsoft is still working out
the bugs.

bash is safe for scripting if you only need to run your scripts on machines
with bash installed. If you want portable scripts, you should use /bin/sh.
Of course, you can write little scripts on the command line in bash ,
and it will usually work with /bin/sh unless you use the more advanced
features of bash. You can write a bash script, then change the first
line and see if it still works. It usually will. But then, if you find
yourself depending on bash's more advanced features, you probably either
(a) need to learn how to squeeze more out of
/bin/sh , or
(b) really should be using a real programming language such as
perl ( which is much more portable than a bash script )

I agree 100%. That's why I use interactive shells such as zsh and bash that are
bourne-shell compatible ( more or less )

Yep. See above.

Hi,
The simply matter of fact is that Iomega chose to use the fourth
partition when formatting the Zip disks to be used in DOS / Windows
systems. Therefore you must mount the fourth partition, as on /dev/hdc4.

Hi all,
Try NOT enabling UDMA in the BIOS. I have a UDMA drive. I do not have UDMA
enabled in the BIOS. However, when I run hdparm -tT /dev/hda, it tests out
as running at UDMA speeds.
Why does this work? WHO KNOWS? But it is worth a try...

I saw that someone else mentioned that their P2B-LS MB was doing the
exact same thing. They had it happen with a bios rev 1002 and currently
with their rev 1003. I'm running the newest rev 1008. This is really
wiggin me out. Cuz when it crashes, its crashing hard, I actually had to
run fsck manually on the drive to have it fix the errors on the drive.
The stuff we had in common with our systems are 300A's oc'd to 450 .. and
128megs of PC100 .. I'd love to know if this bug has been resolved. I
dont even know where to start looking as the system just reboots. The
other guy I've been mentioning has tried it using different memory, and
trying the processor out with different motherboards.
I really would appreciate any help if possible, the system seems to run
fine with win98 (no more instability that win98 has in the first place heh)

Because of Iomega's cross platform compatible partition format. If you
were to fdisk and and format it ext2 you could mount it hdc1, but a DOS
machine or a Mac couldn't read the disk. A full ext2 zip disk will look
like a full FAT disk with no files to a DOS machine.
