I had exactly the same problem. The minicom test worked fine and I
was able to startup pppd using the manual method with minicom. After
many tests, it seems the chat scripts from which I wrote my own were
buggy. I rewrote it on a single line taking care to remove all unecessary
options (TIMEOUTs, ABORT, etc) until it works. I ended with a minimal
chat script, but a working one...

Hope this can help

I have had this happen to me seemingly at random. If the files sit in
the Windows machine, it is a Windows issue. I usually reinstall the
printer driver in Windows, making sure to print directly to the printer
- why even involve the Windows spooler??
Good luck!

Hello everyone,
I live at 10,000 feet and have had all systems newer than a 486DX33Mhz
computer fail me. Since november, this is:

* 3 Dell Inspiron 7500 latptop motherboards (450Mhz). 2 months to failure
* 3 Dell Inspiron 7500 hard drives (12 to 18 gig). 2 months to failure.
* one gateway latop internal modem. 3 days to failure
* one 200 Mhz (overclocked) Gateway tower (2 days, then writing to zip and
floppy drive in linux failed)

Running for days (and years):
486 DX 33Mhz desktop
286 5Mhz desktop

I know airplane computers have radiation sheilds. I also know i have a 3%
higher chance of cancer than the average altitude of the global population
(or maybe it was sea level)

I'm grasping at straws, but hoping some of you may have experience with
high altitude computing, or can point me to a resource.

thanks in advance,

        /swap/ (extended 170megs linux swap)

I have an onboard Adaptec aic-7880 scsi and a 3com NIC in PCI slot 1. They
always come up with the same IRQ from the bios. Even if I assign the IRQ in
the bios, the scsi takes the same one.

Both work after boot, but the scsi keeps resetting, causing the system to
hang for a few seconds, after which eth1 has to be restarted.

Any ideas?

I haven't been able to find a current scsi-howto that includes this device.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

I found that after upgrading to RH 6.1, if the printer was on when
the system was booted, I couldn't print. If the printer was off,
and then turned on later, I could print. Simply unloading and re-
loading the modules did the same thing. Dunno why. Just the other
night, my first print job failed, again because the printer had
been on when I booted. I turned the printer off, did an lprm to
get rid of the spooled file. When I turned on the printer again,
I was able to print without the other fiddling. Given time, I may
actually figure this out. For the time being, I know how to make
the silly thing print when I really want it to.

Hello,

I have a Creative Ensoniq Card with the ES1371 Chipset, installed in a
P-120 64Meg, with GNU/Linux-Mandrake 6.1

My problem is: I cannot seem to record at a sample rate above 15000 Hz
without drop outs, using the stock sound driver that 'sndconfig'
installed.

My question is: Will installation of the ALSA driver allow me to do
sampling above 15000 Hz, specifically to 44100 Hz (required for +/- CD
quality sound). Or is it simply a configuration problem with the stock
sound card drivers and/or my hard drive transfer rate?

I want to transfer a couple of old (and almost worn out) cassette tapes to
CD.

Thanks

Doubtful. DSL modems are like dialup modems, external always works with

For what it's worth, I never got RH 6.x to install from CD on my laptop
with a pcmcia CDROM ( 5.2 installed flawlessly ). I got around it by
creating a DOS partition, copying the RedHat directory from the CD to
there, then doing a HD install.

I have a 15 GB IBM IDE drive that my BIOS says is DMA-OK, but when my
2.0.38 kernel probes it, it turns DMA off. I thought I'd look into
forcing DMA on, but after seeing your post, maybe I won't after all.
WAIT A MINUTE! Why are your drives hdb and hdd??? Your primary master
should be hda! hdb is your primary slave, and hdd is your secondary
slave. What have you got for an IDE master device?

IIRC, this can be fixed with "aumix -c R" on RH6.0. Just fix the
cd launcher's "Command" to be "aumix -c R;gtcd". It's also fixed
in either 6.1 or 6.2 (I have 6.2 and the cd player is fine).

I like the 3Com 900b PCI. It's 10T-base only. So far it works
great in BeOS,3 distros of Linux,98 and 2k. It's $59. If you
don't need a 100T also I recommend it. I had mucho problems with
the Netgear. The Linksys is not bad but some distros need a
recompiled Tulip driver to work. I say spend the extra bucks go
with a quality card.
