Here's a few HOWTO's that might have some of the info you need:

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kiosk-HOWTO.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Public-Web-Browser.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Thinclient-HOWTO.html

The first two are probably the most relevant. :> The 16meg
RAM is the most limiting part - but it works under 95 so
it should work under linux OK. You might want to use IceWM
or another "lightweight" window manager though.

/dev/audio will do.

Subject: Great ZIP problem
Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 07:27:45 GMT

I have a new PC with a VIA82C586 IDE controller. But I have trouble with
Zip.
In summary, when I connect the Zip drive to the ide controller, Linux
isn't able to recognize
the Hard Disk (a Samsung 20 GB UDMA 66). I thought there was an IRQ
problem, but the BIOS
recognizes all IDE drives correctly.

Now I have no ideas to solve this problem and help is more appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Paul.

Hi All,

Has anyone successfully installed and configured a RAID system
using Adaptecs Ultra DMA/66 RAID Card under any flavor of linux?
I plan on using four 75 GB (IBM 75GXP) with this running Rehat 6.1/6.2.
The software that comes with it is WinX so I don't know how
difficult it will be setting this up under linux.

I've been searching various newsgroups and message archives for
related but haven't found much.

Thanks for any information you make have.

Hello,

I was wondering whether anyone had any trouble having compatibility problems
with any of their Sohoware brand ethernet cards with their Linux systems.

Specs:
Name: Sohoware Fast Auto 10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet Card
External DSL modem: Fugitsu Speedport
ISP protocol: TCP/IP only (GTE, PCMagic)
Linux default driver: tulip <--does this generic driver do the job?

Win9.8 works fine with it, but Linux6.0 seems to have problems, notably:
1. "ping <static IP>" is good; "ping <gateway>" is bad
2. card LCD lit under Win98; card LCD not lit under Linux6.0
3. "control-panel" indicates "active" for eth0
4. no other obvious errors regarding software setup, thereby my concluding
it
must be a driver problem

If the Yamaha sound card is based on one of the
YMF7** devices, then ALSA now offers support. I've
recently built the v0.5.8a drivers, which work
with my WF192XG. There's something of a module
loading problem at the moment - the first attempt
either seg faults or reports missing symbols - but
once loaded it appears to work fine.

It is limited to PCM at the moment - no MIDI - but
this is a good start.

I've found that it's the snd-pcm module that's
giving me problems. The first time I do a
'modprobe snd-card-ymfpci', it either seg faults
or throws up undefined symbols. If I repeat the
modprobe, it works!

So, no solution, but a similar problem. You could
try the ALSA mailing list - yes, I know, _I_
should be trying the mailing list... :-)

I've just set up a dual Celeron 500Mhz on a ABIT BP6 motherboard and
it's very quick. Most CPU intensive applications will only use a single
processor but this does free the other one for other tasks. So what you
should be asking yourself is how and what you are using the machine for.
Though that said I suspect you could set up a dual Celeron system
cheaper then a single PIII at the same CPU speed.

Good luck in your decision.

You forgot to mention what distribution/card you you are using.
However, check the file: /var/log/messages for the complete log of the boot

I've had some experience with this.

Apps
----

Netscape doesn't run well on 486 SXs apparently it runs much better on
DXs. If there SXs, then set up a font server on a fast computer.
Netscape 4.7 will run on a 486SX33 with 16MB ram if you have all day to
wait. Try netscape 2.02, but IIRC you have to install a.out
compatibility libs.

x3270 is a 3270 emulator for X. Comes with most distros (i think).

FVWM2 (WM) is very easy to configure, robust, low resource and can look
just like '95. It can have a start menu (with pretty icons) and a button
bar, but no Icons on the desktop. The only way to change this is to edit
the config file (see later). This gui is really very easy to use, and
very easy to configure. The man page for fvwm2 is very good and the
config files provide a really nice example.

SECURITY
=======
To prevent users having to log in, you can put an entry in inittab to
automatically log in as no previlage user and start up X, although some
people might regard this as a bad idea. I don't know any other way of
doing it though. (i'll call this user 'user')

Prevent anyone displaying on X remotely (man xauth)

Run netscape as a chrooted binary, otherwise people can use it to
execute xterms etc.

Disabling remote access daemons is usually a good idea, but not if you
want to remote administer them. Instead (using hosts.allow and
hosts.deny (I think there are other(betetr) ways)) block access from all
computers except the one that you want to use to administer them. You
won't be able to log in as root unless you set up a trusted terminal.
You can, swoever log in and then su to root.

I cna't remember how, you can set up Lilo to require a password if
something like linux 1 is entered at the prompt. This will help prevent
people gaining root access from the terminal.

Remove all virtual consoles from inittab.

Set up all configuration files for the default user to be owned by
someone else, so user cna't edit them.

I suppose that you could even run log in 'user' in a chrooted system.
Every time the computer is rebooted, it could copy a sample set of files
to user's root. This way, even if someone manages to trash all the
configs under user, it won't matter for too long.
I did all of the above except this one. So it is perfectly possible.

Good luck

But when I do a 'rpm -Uvh NVIDIA-kernel-i386.rpm' I get a message saying

What could be the problem? should I update any other libs?

I have SUSE 6.0 with only the kernel updated (2.2.5)

be made to work with windows (95 & NT) , if absolutely necessary.

I'm having problems running Redhat 6.2 on an Athlon box - it freezes
when I try to run mkfs on a disk partition.

My set up:

Athlon 700Mhz, Gigabyte 7IX mainboard, 256Mb RAM, 2 IBM
Ultra66 disks (IBM-DTLA-307030).

Redhat 6.2 with kernel 2.2.14-12.

The root disk has a 2Gb root partition, 512Mb swap and the rest spare.

I can install RH6.2, but when I try run mkfs on the large spare
partition, the machine freezes. It also freezes if I try to dd to the
raw spare partition.

I've also tried:

- installing kernel 2.2.15 + ide.2.2.15.20000509 + raid-2.2.15-A0

- using a Promise Ultra66 PCI controller, instead of the on board IDE
controller

.. but with no improvement.

However, if I replace the mainboard/CPU with a Intel based mainboard and
a PII (with or without the Promise controller), it works fine (although
slower).

Can anyone suggest anything else? Could the Athlon/mainboard be faulty?

Is there any other kernel tweak I could make?

For various reasons, I don't want to use a 2.3 based kernel ...

Thanks

James Pearson

i have a i486 (DX-2 66 o/c -> 80) running RedHat 6.0, 16Mb Ram and am having
a few problems as follows that i cannot figure out, so i ask thee for a
hand:

number 1)
i recently put a 210 Mb hdd in it (in addition to my 540 Mb hdd) and it
already had the MS fat filesystem on it, and it runs REALLY slow (like the
dox say) and i want to know how to make it user the ext2 filesystem.

number 2)
i have a yamaha Opl-SAx sound card and was wondering how to use the on board
ide controller for it (i couldnt find it in all the options when i compiled
the kernel, and i cant find any docs on it)

number 3)
i cant get apache (v 1.3) to look for user dirctories. i have made a
'public_html' directory on the user i wanted to test it with, but i get
"Forbidden" error, no matter ,who owns the files/directory, or what chmod
values i set on them

number 4)
when i boot to my compiled kernel, the computer does not finish finding
module dependencies, it will chug away at it for a while, and one night i
left it for the night and went to bed and the next morning it was still
sittig at the "finding module dependencies" section, and the hdd had
stopped, when i press CTRL + C the machine comtinues to boot, and works OK
except for the above problems i have with it.

i thank you all in advance for any type o help you can provide!
