Hi, One sad thing about HAL, hotplug and other "automation" scripts is that if your CDROM/DVD-R drive has issues, your machine is going to halt or "freeze", which seems like same thing happend to you..
My guess is that it's something wrong with your drive, which "freezes" the OS... I suggest you run k3b, but open konsole, and do: tail -f /var/log/messages - see if it prints anything.
