Question..Could you login as any other user? 

Every user has a default shell specified as last field
in /etc/passwd. If the default shell is invalid for
root, then i guess this can happen. ( how shell can be
in invalid is a question)

Check /etc/password file.Check whether this is a valid
shell for your system
(/bin/bash in my m/c)
