Once the login accepts userid and password  from you 
It does some authenication. How do we  know that is
done? Check your auth.log, syslog and messages
(/var/log area)..

I suspect wu-ftp installation changed some thing in
the PAM. These are not used in single user mode. may
be some thing went wrong here that affect in the
normal login(multi user mode)
