well try one thing. log in as root, and as soon as you type the password
and hit enter, press Ctrl+Z to prevent the root profile from being read.
It was a trick we learnt to get into the system in our normal user
logins when others (as a prank) added the command "logout" in the 
.bash_profile as the first line. I am not saying that something like that 
happened to you.
But maybe you can get into the system in this method. Even though you
uninstalled wu-ftpd from the system, maybe u should go to /etc/xinetd.d/
and delete whatever entry you added for wu-ftpd in single-user mode.
