Why bad? One of the best methods to cull spam...

You are mixing two entirely different things.


1. HELO rejects - those depend on the HELO, not on the connecting IP

2. Check for the connecting IP - if it is a dialup, or an open relay / proxy then reject the mail

Both are quite effective - the HELO checks far more than the IP rejects, right now.

ugghhhh. Is sourceforge serious? You mean it will connect to my domain
and actually use the VRFY verb to check if my email address / username
exists?

MAIL FROM: / RCPT TO: actually, most if not all servers don't enable VRFY by default.
