Assuming, of course, that we have to choose one system in its full
glory. Anything carried to extremes is usually harmful.

One can argue just as well that intellectual property (particularly
patents) is socialistic, in that the government enforces restrictions
on third parties' use of information who do not have an agreement with
anyone else, and that freeing software is rational behavior on the
part of producers who determine that they will receive more benefit
from liberating their software than from keeping it proprietary.

Has anyone succeded in getting jdk 1.2 to work with SuSe 6.0 ?
I got it to compile ( HelloWorld ) but the interpreter crashes on me...

It doesn't find a certain lib6 library... eventhough SuSe 6.0 is glibc

I do it with "modprobe snd-esssolo1" and "modprobe snd-pcm1-oss", the
latter allowing for use of "older" software (different devices?). It's
all in the Mini-HOWTO at alsa site.

But i have no luck with recording. "not supported by device"... Can't
find solution. Otherwise works fine (if not for the quality of sound).

Do you have one at all?

& what does this have to do with Linux?

By any reasonable criteria it is totally irrelevant to Linux.

For curiousity's sake, read a dictionary definition of "fascism".
Most [USA} business enterprises are operated on criteria that parallel
fascism. What do you make of that?

You may have to build a kernel, or at least a module. The module name
is sbpcd, with device major ID 25. In "make xconfig", for example, it's
in the CDROM section, "Matsushita/Panasonic/Creative, Longshine, TEAC
CDROM support".

Otherwise, a second-hand quad-speed IDE CD drive is about $30 these days
;-).

Is it right that you can change the values specified in the file
/proc/sys/vm/freepages for better performance.
I have read somewhere about it (I think in /usr/doc or /usr/doc/HOWTO),
but I cannot find it anymore. I remember that I tried to change the
values, but that it was not possible for some unknown reason (yes, I was

You are mixing programs or libraries (or both) compiled by
gcc and egcs. Unfortunately this sometimes doesn't work.

One solution is to pick through the programs and libraries
to find out where this symbol is required and resolved,
then make the appropriate fix; another is to get a entirely
consistent set; also there is a hack that may work for you
at http://www.garloff.de/kurt/freesoft/ .

How do you set the options for the cdrdao, could you post an example of
usage?
I tried cdrdao once, that particular version was supposed to be
compatible with the drive (panasonic 7502) yet it produced a disk that
had only silence on it.
There is this issue of inverting byte order in wav files, maybe also
some other options that I did not set right (used the default, this
being linux i386 I thought it should be OK).
Why is the byte order an option anyway? *.wav being the DOS audio format
should it not be written into files with the correct byte order
irrespective of the endianness of the host?

Yes, if you really want to go Quad, it's PPro or
Pentium[II, or III]Xeon are your only Intel choices.
Either will work for SMP Linux. (If you've got the

problem.
Here is where I am at so far:

fsdisk /dev/hdb

created directory /home/library on my 1st HD.

And this is where my problems start!
I use Linuxconf-filesystem-access local drive
to map hdb1 to /home/library
now when I open a shell window and cd /home/library
I find a copy of all my root directories and files.
"df -a" shows hdb1 is 28% used

Thanks in advance for any help.

I do mostly recording of data, computer archives, but I've done
some audio recording too, all of it at 4x. I've had occasional failures
but I think they were defects in the CD. (Have you ever looked at a CD and
seen that there's a difference in the sheen on the tracks on some parts
than others? The first failure I ever had I looked at the underside and
saw that the inner part was lighter than the outer.)

I've read about a program called gpart that can reconstruct a
partition table. The following is from the announcement:

======================
This is the first public release of gpart, a small tool
which attempts to reconstruct the primary partition table
of a hard disk by stepping through its sectors and looking
for possible filesystem/partition starts.

Because this is an alpha-release it still needs lots of
testing. Especially the HPFS-detection was not tested.

Begin3
Title: gpart
Version: 0.1b
Entered-date: 11JAN99
Description: A tool which tries to guess the primary partition
table of a PC-type hard disk in case the primary
partition table in sector 0 is damaged, incorrect
or deleted. The guessed table can be written to a
file or device. Supported (guessable) filesystem or
partition types: DOS/Windows FAT, Linux ext2 and
swap, OS/2 HPFS, Windows NTFS, FreeBSD and Solaris/x86
                disklabels, Minix FS.

Hi there!

I had the same problem as you. First you must check if you hav S3V server
installed in your computer. If you don't have it installed you must
install it from the source where you get Linux (CD??). You must use rpm
command if you are using Red Hat (see Red Hat Instalation Guide). Then you
must change your symbolic link from ther server that X is using, I believe
it is SVA, for the new server you have installed.

I hope this can help you.

The pII can only be configured in dual-processor configuration max. Same
with the pentium II overdrive (upgrade for pentium pro) and celerons. Must
have something to do with the core.

quad ppro motherboards are incredibly expensive. I thought of upgrading my

would be less expensive... Instead, I'll get two celeron 466 when they are

I'm having some problems setting up openldap on one of our machines. When I
try to run slapd I get:

[root@mail libexec]# slapd -d 5
slapd 1.2.1-Release (Mon Apr 26 20:13:02 CDT 1999)
        [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/ldap/servers/slapd
bind() failed errno 98 (Address already in use)

Address already in use? I'm not sure what I did wrong. Here is my ldap.conf:

#
# LDAP Defaults

# See ldap.conf(5) for details
# This file should be world readable.

#BASE dc=OpenLDAP, dc=Org

#SIZELIMIT 12

and my slapd.conf:

Hmm.. I must have configured the server wrong. Any ideas?

More fuel for the "Distribution Wars". (;-)

Nicholas Petreley's "Down To The Wire" column in the April 19 issue of
InfoWorld is subtly(;-) titled

"Caldera OpenLinux turns Windows into roadkill sooner than you
    expected"

For the full column (suitable for framing and sending copies to your
"Linux is too user-unfriendly" acquaintances), see

And, of course, for Caldera details, see

That's odd. I emailed them a couple of months ago. I got a reply saying
they were planning to support Linux and other *nixes.

You asked "when would one use" the preceeding. The problem is that the
answer depends on the Makefile. The argument to make (i.e. make something)
is the name of a 'target' listed in the Makefile; in your examples, "clean",
"mrproper", "dep", "install", and "all" are names of specific targets in a
specific Makefile, and other Makefiles are not guaranteed to have the same
targets.

In this case, when in doubt, read the documentation (including Makefile).

I don't know of any online resources, but O'Reilly publishes a book
on Make that's both reasonably priced, and quite complete.
