The Linux "ls" comes from the GNU fileutils (see the output of
"ls --version"), so you want to consult the fileutils _info_
pages for authoritative information.

(By the way, it says the former, and Stuart R. Fuller's
explanation of what _that_ means seems reasonable to me.)

perhaps not for cross-product. the cross-product isn't associative.
(R^3,+,x) is a Lie algebra[1].

[1] where R^3 is triples of reals, + normal vector addition and x is
    the cross product.

UPS is an Uninterruptable Power Supply.
You connect it to the mains, you computer to it.
When the mains supply fails, it switches to battery backup and alerts the
computer that the mains have failed.

The computer can then alert the user to save what he's doing and shutdown
before the batteries fail.

You're being very vague. (Something that doesn't help in troubleshooting)
What are you trying to DO when you get the "interpreter" error message?
If it's part of the boot process, what are the messages before it.
What distro are you using? etc etc etc...

You need to fix the error involved with the file system check first. At
the prompt type: fsck /dev/hda
(assuming /dev/hda is where your Linux partion is, it may be /dev/hdb,
etc).
It will check your drive and ask you if it can fix things. Say yes to
the questions. When it is done, reboot Linux. When it reboots, it
should work normally again (assuming no major filesystem damage was
done.)

do you have a default gateway defined in your network
configuration? try a 'route -n' and look at your network device:

Assuming you're on an ether-net-work, you'll have an entry
with ethX (0,1 or so..) and an ip adress of 0.0.0.0 as the second
field in that line.. If such an entry is not there, you probably
don't have a default gateway assigned. And that's probably why
you can't send external mail..

Post your 'route -n' output for a better suggestion..
Don't have access to my linux box now, so cannot test this out
or give you the exacts..

Thanks for your answer. Every help is valuable:)

Are there problems in configuration of the modem-cable I have with Linux. I
am thinking of configurations of proxy setings, etc. I know how to configure
it in Windows 95/98. Is it similar in Linux?

I plan to buy a comprehensive manual for Linux before I dare to install it.

When I first installed COL 2.2, it came up as 24bpp and WP (and I believe
Netscape) didn't display color icons, etc. I changed to 32bpp, and it
worked fine. When I reinstalled to a new hard disk after a crash, it came
up as 16bpp and that works, too.

Logout and log back in...that should do it. On my RH6, I have to specify which
desktop I want each time I log in or I get GNOME--which, for some reason, is
not particularly stable on my machine (ironically, less stable than Win98 :o)

If that for some reason takes you back to AS, then log out again and, at
RehHat's handy login GUI, choose :

Options>System>GNOME (or KDE)

That should do the trick!

This did the trick for me -- like many , my transfer speed dropped
dramatically when I upgraded to 6.0. To make it permanent, I just copied
the echoed init string from minicom into the kppp modem setup, replacing
the "ATZ". I went from ~1kB to sustained ~5kb transfer on multi-MB files.

Subject: HP7550 plotter,9600baud and hpgl help:))
Reply-To: No-Spam
Date: 26 Aug 1999 13:04:56 +0800

Hi All,
I've got a HP7550 8 pen plotter, I'm setting up to use for PCB
artwork. Its native language is HPGL.

I've found a converter from ps to hpgl (pstoedit) but I can't get setserial
to allow me to send a file, ie "cat test.hpgl > /dev/cua1".
The above command sends data, but its not 9600 baud, which is the
fastest this plotter and my datacoms analyser will go.

This is the status of my /dev/cua1 as reported by setserial, initally
        root@gronk /home/tp >setserial /dev/cua1 -a
/dev/cua1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
        Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
        Flags: spd_normal skip_test

If I change the divisor to 12 (115200/12 = 9600) and issue the option
pdd_cust, it still won't give me 9600 baud, the man page says this regarding
the use of this option :-

"spd_cust
Use the custom divisor to set the speed when the application requests
38.4kb. In this case, the baud rate is the baud_base divided by the divisor.
This parameter may be specified by a non-privi-leged user."

This seems to indicate that an application needs to request 38.4kb before I
can get my 9600baud ?

Is there a way I can just cat my file out of the serial port at a fixed baud
rate, perhaps with hardware or xon/xoff handshaking ?

I've searched thru the serial how-to but it deals with faster serial
requirements, not slow ones :(

Any one willing to throw some words of wisdom my way ???

Tia

kind regards
Terry

I'm new to Linux. Lets get that strait. I've had it for almost two weeks
and now I want to code with it now that I've got everything (almost) up and
running (not my TV Tuner). I want to completely replace windows. But in
windows when I want to code a good app I use C/C++, but when I want to slap
together a frontend or a small app that will do tedious jobs I use VB (I
know don't get mad but it's good to change windows registery settings when
I'm too lazy to open regedit). I don't consider VB a *language* but it can
do small loops when I want directories from 0 to 1000 created and stuff
that takes a while by hand. Anyways I want to learn Tcl/Tk to make a
frontend for my app that I want to port to Linux. Now I know it's not
*visual* and I like that but can someone tell me where I can get EVERYTHING
I need to make apps in Tcl/Tk and where to download them all. As well as
some good tutorials since I've never even seen Tcl/Tk code yet but I want
tutorials that go beyond the basics. I'm going to start with an app that
sets enviroment variables for me. That's what I'm starting with. I'm
running Mandrake 6.0 (the newbie distribution!) with kernels 2.2.9 &
2.3.13. Thanks for any reply but please e-mail it to me instaed of posting
it :)

Hello,

In order to access Internet from Linux box via MS-Proxy you need to
configure client to use SOCKS proxy. And all of your programs need to be
adopted to use SOCKS proxy.

For more info take a look at Proxy HOWTO at www.linux.com

Good luck!

I have to say, the sheer amount of help being offered is amazing. It
is quite appreciated. I was getting frustrated, but I'll stick with
it. I got Linux just as a curiosity to see how it works, I just need
to walk away for a while when I get pissed! :-) I have emailed my
ISP and have not received a response in a little over 48 hours. I'll
try the 45 minute waiting game I have to play on their telephone
support if I don't hear anything in another day or so. The tech
support offered with the software purchase (romnet.com) finally
responded and offered this gem of advice, "No idea." Wow, the guy has
a real career option at Microsoft if he wants it! There have been
several new items posted since I checked the board last and I'll
definately check them out the first chance I get. Heck, with all the
help being offered, it'd be foolish to give up now...

Thanks again.
