Alt-SysRq-k : kill all processes on current VT
Alt-SysRq-s : sync disks
Alt-SysRq-b : soft-boot machine immediately
Alt-SysRq-u : mount all filesystems read-only

There are more, but those are the most useful. If everything locks

yes, at least for the DOS part...

/dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat noauto,user 0 0

The CD-ROM part is a bit different. Many CD-ROMs are made using the
Joliet extensions to the ISO9660 standard, which allow long filenames for
DOS/Win in Unicode. Your CD-ROM driver has to have support for Joliet
extensions compiled in; this probably means a kernel recompile. Make sure
to enable ROck Ridge extensions while you're at it; these provide similar
functionality and are found on Linux distro CDs. HTH,

I was playing a game for linux and the machine suddenly froze up (as far as
I could see, even the keyboard LEDs were all dead). Now with NT, this is a
rarity and it usually suggests wrong driver or faulty hardware.

I wonder if the same applies to Linux. How often should I assume Linux to
die? Especially when you are playing games.

Probably because when a Linux security issue is discovered, people who are
into programming fix the problem in the freely distributed source code.
Hurray for the GNU License.

Linux does not use 'printer drivers', at least not in the same sense as
MS-Windows. Instead, linux uses Ghostscript as a print *filter*. So,
the 'printer drivers' all live inside of Ghostscript itself.

You need to set up the proper print filter logic with Ghostscript.
With RedHat, this is fairly painless. Just fire up the print tool:
'/usr/bin/printtool', select Add, local printer, and then Select an
input filter for your printer. You might want to look at
/usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/printerdb -- this is the database of
known print filters. There are comments in this file that describe
compatibility issues for different model printers.

This is what the admins are for:

"Some @#$%ing luser set off a fork bomb!"
"Idiot. [clickety-click] su luser ; kill -SIGTERM -1"

Depending on how BOFHish the admin was feeling, "rm -rf ~luser" might
follow, and at the very least, said fork-bomber would get a strongly
worded E-mail about the proper use of the system.

WTF is a "logical drive" as WinXX defines it?... any partition on a local
disk, a remote disk mounted via SMB, a logical partition on a local disk?
I've seen the term used mainly to refer to the last case, but those others
might fit as well.

Anyway, there is a limit in Linux; an IDE drive can only have 63
partitions on it (3 primary, 1 extended, 59 logical) and a SCSI drive can
only have 15 partitions. The number of partitions/filesystems you can
mount is limited as well, but the limit's well over 32 and ultimately
dependent on how much memory you have in the machine IIRC.

Not so sure about the autoloader on the tape drive.

Edit ~/.xinitrc ... or if you're running KDE or GNOME, there's an

True, but IIRC BIOS companies like Award (which has been bought by
Phoenix btw) deliver something like a standardized BIOS that has to be
adapted to a specific hardware on a motherboard. So it's TYAN's duty to
make sure the powerdown cycle is implemented properly. On the S1590S
this is not the case. The specs call for real mode before powerdown.
TYAN's BIOS doesn't do this, that's why there is a real mode patch for
Linux. Other MoBo manufacturers have provided updated BIOS's to correct
this problem.
TYAN doesn't care about this, they don't care to answer emails regarding
this issue, hence I don't care to buy TYAN products in the future.
I prefer Linux-aware and customer-oriented companies.

Quite true.
Many local councils in the UK are switching their networks over to Linux because
of its robustness, price and the fact that its origins have been around for
decades. This means that there are many more people who can offer support, and
there is less chance of finding bugs and security holes. I am not saying that
these organisations will be using it to play games, but the more businesses that
use Linux means the more employees will want it at home, meaning more demand for
software companies to release Linux versions of their software.

Besides, if you just want to play games buy a Playstation at a sixth of the
price of a PC.
