Not to shut down is IMHO not a good plan for preserving energy,
especially since I'm using my box for only 1 - 2 hours a day. Running
Linux 24/7 is a good thing for servers though.

Regarding Linux and Siemens I can't give you any information at all. I'm
in the automotive business writing software for body controller
modules....
In the office we're only using Micro$oft stuff, unfortunately.

[Sorry for the redundant cross-post, but either my news reader is burping
or one of the NGs in my cross-post list is moderated and causing the others
not to go through. --- WHH]

Is there a way to remap the default screen colors (just the Linux
terminal screen colors --- not X colors) in Linux? I'm running RHL 6.1
on a Linux box in my office, and have TERM set to "linux". I connect
to it via dialup from my Windows 2000 system at home, using PenguiNet
for Windows 95/NT/2000. PenguiNet has ssh but (AFAIK) none of the
screen color customizability features that Windows Telnet or Teraterm
has, and I'd like to be able to get my good old-fashioned lime-on-black
green screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

You're correct.
You can compile it for any of those.
AMDs are fully Pentium class architecture. Mandrake compiles optimized for a
pentium and I use an AMD k6-2 450 and it FLIES.
If you compile it for PPro, please lemme know how well that works out.... I
might have to look into recompiling soon anyways for some errors I've been
having, could be interesting to up the code

Are you using VESA modes in console? If yes, then this might be the
problem.

You may want to try

startx -bpp 8

or write -bpp 8 as argument to the call in ~/.xinitrc.

Often this is just X freezing. If so you can get out with
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace

  OpenSSL version 0.9.5 released
  ===============================

OpenSSL - The Open Source toolkit for SSL/TLS
  http://www.openssl.org/

The OpenSSL project team is pleased to announce the release of version
0.9.5 of our open source toolkit for SSL/TLS. This new OpenSSL version
incorporates over 150 changes and bugfixes to the toolkit (for a complete
  list see http://www.openssl.org/source/exp/CHANGES).

  The most significant changes are:

o S/MIME support in new 'smime' command
o Documentation for the OpenSSL command line application
     o Automation of 'req' application
o Fixes to make s_client, s_server work under Windows
o Support for multiple fieldnames in SPKACs
o New SPKAC command line utilty and associated library functions
o Options to allow passwords to be obtained from various sources
o New public key PEM format and options to handle it
o Many other fixes and enhancements to command line utilities
     o Usable certificate chain verification
     o Certificate purpose checking
     o Certificate trust settings
o Support of authority information access extension
     o Extensions in certificate requests
o Simplified X509 name and attribute routines
o Initial (incomplete) support for international character sets
     o New DH_METHOD, DSA_METHOD and enhanced RSA_METHOD
o Read only memory BIOs and simplified creation function
o TLS/SSL protocol bugfixes: Accept TLS 'client hello' in SSL 3.0
record; allow fragmentation and interleaving of handshake and other
       data
o TLS/SSL code now "tolerates" MS SGC
o Work around for Netscape client certificate hang bug
o RSA_NULL option that removes RSA patent code but keeps other
       RSA functionality
o Memory leak detection now allows applications to add extra information
       via a per-thread stack
     o PRNG robustness improved
     o EGD support
     o BIGNUM library bug fixes
     o Faster DSA parameter generation
o Enhanced support for Alpha Linux
     o Experimental MacOS support

We consider OpenSSL 0.9.5 to be the best version of OpenSSL available and
we strongly recommend that users of older versions, especially of old SSLeay
versions, upgrade as soon as possible. OpenSSL 0.9.5 is available for
download via HTTP and FTP from the following master locations (the various
FTP mirrors you can find under http://www.openssl.org/source/mirror.html):

I would even say: if you do not need the fanciest GUI there is you
could run Linux even on an old 486 with 16MB of RAM. Moreover,
ther are distributions, which cost you less than 50Bucks and do
also come with a whole bunch of compilers for almost any language
you can think of.

On Redhat 6.0, when I try to edit sendmail.cf for the DM (I masquarade
as) field, I still get my mail bounced back, since my mail still says
root@myboxname. Manually editing sendmail used to work in Redhat 5.2,
now in 6.0 it says use the sendmail.m4 file. However when I use the m4
"command" after editing the sendmail.m4 file, it says m4 is not there
(even using absolute path). Is something missing? where can I get the m4
"command"? Or am I doing something wrong on the manual edit of
sendmail.cf?

Any help appreciated :o)

Subject: printer stopped working! Can you help?
Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 17:30:10 GMT

Hi,
I bought a Epson Stylus 900 printer which I tried to hook up with my
machine which is loaded with Redhat 6.1 and Windows.
First I couldn't configure the printer for LinuX. There were two problems:
1) Bug in Redhat 6.1 version - you need to include a line in
/etc/conf.modules file (alias ... parport pc ...)
2)As far as I know there is no driver for this printer.
To resolve this I modified my conf.modules file accordingly and tried a
different driver - Epson ECP (or C) 2 (something like this - I forgot
now). In the first time it worked - I was able to print out a black and
white test page. The I tried Epson Stylus Color with 360x360dpi and
was also able to print a color test page (both ascii and postscript).
But the color was not that good so I tried a higher resolution
720x720 - then my printer started to print junk when I tried to print
the test ps file. I switched off the printer - removed all the jobs with
lprm. Then I changed my printer to the previous one - but now the printer
desn't response. The printer works fine under Windows but when I tried to
print in Linux - say for example the test page - it sends the page to
the printer queue but it didn't print anything!! I tried to see using
lpq - but there are no entries!!!!! I tried many ways - each time
deleting the proper files from the /var/spool/lpd directory. Also looked
at the /etc/printcap file. But nothing works!!
I disconnected my printer from the machine - reboot it but strangely when
I tried to add a printer - the autodetection found the port!!!!
Now my guess is - somewhere this info got registered when I first hooked
up the printer and it found the proper port. There may be also a lock file
which is preventing the printer to print. But I couldn't find anything -
is there anyone who can help me with this.
Thank you very much.

There are more to "merits" than the product quality. There are very good
reasons why home VCR formats worked out the way they did.

When you talk about "history", think about all the great revolutions -- the
(Chinese) cultural revolution, the Russian revolution, the French revolution

end follows suit.

Put your light saber down, buddy. The only "struggle" is that to offer

Hello,

Unfortunately I've a small (at least, I hope) problem: the second

I have seen :

on RH 6.0 (linux 2.2.6) and SlackWare 7.0 (linux 2.2.13)

hda: IBM-DJNA-351520 , 14664MB w/430kb , CHS=...

hdc: CR-4802TE, ATAPI CDROM drive

ide0 : BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007 BIOS SETTING hda=DMA hdb=DMA

ide1 : BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00F BIOS SETTING hdc=DMA hdd=DMA

In the bios a set every hard disk on LBA not CHS

If it can help, I put what OpenBSD's Kernel detect :

(on OpenBSD 2.4 2.5 2.6)

wd0 at wdc0 drive 0: <IBM-DJNA-351520>

wd0: 14664MB , 16383 cyl, 16 head , 63 sec , 512 bytes/sec ...

wd1: using 16-sector 16-bit pio transfers, lba adressing (2048 Kb cache)

My mother board is an Abit BH6

I hope someone got a solution.

Thank you by advance.

I'd love to know how to get my floppy disc to eject itself.

For those who have zip drives, it's probably a lot easier to eject one of
them - and the writes are far faster.
