Hi,

the solution is definitely simple. I just can't see.

I want to start a second X session from another login on my Caldera 2.4
system.
But X says there's already a session on Display 0 which is correct. It
should then try to
start a session for :1.0 , but it doesn't.

Can anyone give me a hint where to look?

Thanks,

Martin.

I need to get a file from a ".rpm" archive. Unfortunately, it
is a RPM 4.0 format archive, which my system is unable to read.
I only need this single file and I don't at all want to install
it into my system. After a hell of problems I succeeded to
compile rpm 4.0 from the sources from ftp.rpm.org, but now I
didn't gained anything. It wants a database, but for creating a
database it wants a package, and all I want to have is no
database but THAT DAMNED FILE IN THAT RPM !!!!

Does anyone know a tool to extract files from a RPM ? Thank

I would like to know how to inhibit "screen saver" type blanking of
the linux console (graphic or character mode - seems to happen in all
configurations.) Not sure where to look, but I'd like to simply
disable this feature so the console stays on/displaying continuously.

Tnx,

You are indeed correct Lew.... And now that you mention it, I remember
why I said that about the original post. The original poster had, in
fact, defined the "Followups to" header as alt.os.linux, which, on my
NG server at least, is not a valid NG. Either way, thanks for clearing

I am setting up a mail server (qmail). All our users are in an NT 4

could run on Linux to quickly add all the users, or will I have to do it
by hand? Each user would need a home directory (in NT, you can do
something like /home/%username%, so jsmith would get /home/jsmith). Any
ideas? I'm not much of a programmer, so the simpler the better!

Since the advent of glibc2 (a.k.a. libc6), user-level programs are not
supposed to #include <asm/*.h> files directly. You probably need to try
another approach.

You need to login as root to build a kernel.

Another option is to use "make xconfig". This gives a GUI configuration

If you are using the Grub boot loader then you need to go to the /boot/grub
directory and add a new entry to the menu.lst file for the new kernel.

Then run "sh install.sh" to update the grub boot loader.

An X server setup is exceedingly simple IF you use ssh. I was originally
thinking VNC, then got my hands on a X server (just a simple Win app, nothing
unusual about running it) and a SSH client for win. Now, all I have to do is
set up a ssh connect to the machine, with X tunnelling enabled. At that
point, assuming I have started the X server on the windows machine, I can
run any X app and have it displayed on the PC. Does not require futzing
with any other variables - the ssh client even sets up the DISPLAY variable
automatically.

If the apparent complexity of remote X apps has scared you away, I STRONGLY
recommend that you take a look at ssh+X - works like a charm! (Also very
nice to do some "load balancing" between various machines...)

Do you per chance have a ReiserFS partition? I had this problem on a

I've seen memory problems with NS... The latest was this AM, when I'd
left NS running on one machine overnight. Came in to find the machine
apparently totally lockes up (no KB / mouse / display) and no way to kill
X or anything else. Ctr-Alt-Del would not do anything either. I've seen
it before where it will just use up so much memory that the machine ends
up in a swap race (essentially) where it keeps swapping in and out of
memory to the point that nothing else can run. The only way to fix this
is to kill NS, and I've at times seen up to 45-60 MB of memory suddenly
get freed. This for a single NS window, and a single NS process...

Just have to remember to close and restart NS every so often, and no
problems....

As for this morning, the SysRq sequence saved the day....

MDK 7.2 will not by default install a SMP kernel even if you have a MP machine.
You would have to manually install kernel-smp to get a smp enabled kernel
to the machine, and then modify the boot options (or chose by hand at boot
time) to get a smp enabled kernel to boot. So, if you do not know how
to disable it, I doubt you have a SMP kernel on the machine... :-)

As somebody else pointed out : before fooling around with kernel
compilations, check your installation. Mandrake offers SMP and
"normal" kernels. Do a
rpm -q -a | egrep kernel
If you see
kernel-2.2.17-21
you don't have SMP in the kernel. If you see
kernel-smp-2.2.17-21
you do have SMp in the kernel.
You can also find
kernel-doc-2.2.17-21
kernel-headers-2.2.17-21
kernel-source-2.2.17-21
kernel-utils-2.2.17-21

If you find both, you should de-install one, or,
if you even find :
kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.2.17-21
kernel-linus-2.2.17-1
kernel-secure-2.2.17-21
You definetly have too many kernels on your machine.

But before you de-install a kernel make sure you leave one that
you use in yoiur boot setup !

With Nero, do the following:

1. Select File menu
2. Select "Burn Image"
3. Select files of type "All Files (*.*)"
4. Find the ISO file
5. Double-click on it.
6. Select OK at the screen.

Hey, all;

I'm having an couple of issues getting a kernel compiled on a
new Redhat 6.2 installation on a HP netserver.

Here's what I'm getting:

Issue 1:

I'm getting multiple unresolved module dependencies when booting
the system. All the dependencies are for functions/systems that I
have configured out of the kernel because they're not installed or
won't be used on this system. I've done the

make modules; make modules_install

However, still getting the errors.

How do I make those go away?

Issue 2:

In an attempt to circumvent the dependency errors, I reconfigured
the kernel to modularize the items and didn't select any of the
internal components to them. So far, every kernel I've compiled
that way gets most of the way through the boot, sees the boot
disk and partitions, mounts the root filesystem read-only, then

Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

What did I mess up?

Thanks for your time.
