Subject: SiS 6326 AGP and XF86Config
Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 20:11:59 GMT

I have been trying to get Xwindows running with a Diamond Speedstar A50 video
card with SiS 6326 AGP chipset. I have installed XFree86-3.3.3.1-25 and have
tried countless customization combinations with XF86Config but can't seem to
get anything higher than 640x480. I have an NEC Multisync A700+ Monitor and
have confirmed the monitor hsync and vsync ranges match with the specs in the
manual.

Miscellaneous information -

1. I keep getting an error file showing up called .FVWM2-errors in the root
directory. The error states: Unable to find usable depth. This leads me to
believe that the problem lies within "Screen Section" of the XF86Config file
but nothing I try seems to work.

2. As I mentioned I can get Xwin at 640x480 but when I attempt to open the
control panel, nothing happens. When I attempt to adjust the resolution using
Ctrl-Alt and + or - I get a black screen.

I am including my latest and greatest XF86Config for anyone who might have an
answer.

There are multiple reasons for and against going with an Alpha or PPC
vs. Intel... on of which is *all* the other hardware is Intel x86 based
and having *binary* compatibility is important. That said, I too am
interersted in this topic for the simple reason that the 450NX chipset
motherboards can support 4 way interleaving of memory, plus the use of
alternate (4 32bit PCI buses, 2 64bit PCI buses or 2 32bit & 1 64bit PCI
buses) bus structure, up to 8 Xeon CPUs (with cluster controller)... I'm
not as interested in the size of the address space as much as the size
of the memory bandwidth and I/O bus structure...

Subject: Problems with Chat Script/pppd/diald on RedHat 5.1 ...
Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 17:06:57 -0500

I've been having a problem with my chat script I am trying to use to
automate connecting to the net through diald.

I have everything set up ok and can dial in through minicom, and run
pppd by hand ... Everything works fine (as long as I am REALLY QUICK on
the draw - bellatlantic.net likes to drop you quickly if you don't start
talking ppp)

But when I try to do it automatically through diald/chat ... it breaks
... in particular, the chat script breaks ...

diald automatically starts running the chat script just like it should,
however in the chat, it never sees the 'CONNECT 48000/ARQ' string, and
timeouts instead ...

I see the CONNECT line just fine when going thorugh minicom ...

Anyway please have an answer for me?

Included below are my chat script, and the log file of the attempt ...

Thanks,
Eli

Sorry if this is a simple question. Is the version of gcc (and egcs)
that comes w/ Red Hat 5.2 outdated? If so, where can I find the RPMs
for the latest gcc/egcs version? Any hints on upgrading gcc? Thanks.
FC.

I was reading the documentation for pppd. It appears as if it is
capable of bringing up a ppp connection on demand. Then the question
becomes. What are the essential differences between diald and pppd?

See, this is why it's good to have a Copyright notice even though you
don't really need one. Anyway, these are things you can do:

- mail a copy of your manuscript to yourself in a sealed envelope, keep it
  (sealed)
- have a solicitor/lawyer (what's ein Notar / un huissier in English?)
keep a sealed copy, let him sign a paper about the exact date you
  gave him the copy
- let a bank lock a copy up in their vault, keep the receipt
- etc. etc.

All these are ways to time-stamp your manuscript to prove you were
first.

Subject: glibc6 2.1 compile/install prob
Date: Wed, 03 Mar 1999 23:13:20 GMT

I am having problems installing Glibc2 on my slackware 3.6 x86 linux box.
I have gone through and upgraded/installed all the tools necesary for
compilation, but when i go to install i get problems. I've tried several
different install locations, etc but I end up getting the same problem.
Basically after I install I get compiler errors int the header file libio.h
whenever I try to compile anything. I get 4 parse errors and two warnings
that the "data definition has no type or storage class." The parse errors
are on _IO_seekoff, _G_off64_t, _IO_seekpos, _G_fpos64_t. I am using EGCS
1.0.3 (i also tried 1.1.1 but same thing). This compiler worked fine
compiling the library itself... anyone got any ideas?

Subject: Compiling a c++ program
Date: Wed, 03 Mar 1999 23:47:15 GMT

I'm trying to make a program written in C++ (Frodo, the C64 emulator). When I
run the makefile, I get the following output:

cc -O3 -g -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall -Wno-unused -Wno-format -W
-Wmissing-prototypes -Wstrict-prototypes -I -fno-strength-reduce
-DREGPARAM="__attribute__((regparm(3)))" -I/usr/X11R6/include -I./
-DBROKEN_JOYSTICK_H= -DFRODO_HPUX_REV=0 -DKBD_LANG=0 -o main.o -c main.cpp
cc: installation problem, cannot exec `cc1plus': No such file or directory
make: *** [main.o] Error 1

I can manually compile main.c using

g++ -c main.cpp

with no problems, though when I try

gcc -c main.cpp

I get the same problem. The problem program in question seems to be
located at

/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/egcs-2.90.29/cc1plus

Anyone know what the problem might be? I'm betting that it's a
path-related problem somewhere, but this is the first time I've ever tried
to make a program written in C++, so perhaps I'm missing something? Any
help would be appreaciated.

cheers

Yep, that works. Let's do that instead of just talking about it, though.

But the charter for c.o.l.misc says that "if it's on-topic here, then it's
not on-topic for any other c.o.l. group." QED.

Followups set accordingly.

'fraid so!

Under the FSF Act, adopted by the United Nations and the Geneva
Convention, if you asked for it, and it ain't there, you have to
impliment it. Failure to do so is punishable by a lengthy absence of
the requested feature.

what does the 5 mean?

I have pcmcia-cs-3.0.8 installed on a laptop computer with SuSE 6.0.
My problem is that the cardservices is installed _after_ networking
trys to initialize. This causes networking to fail becuase the NIC
hasn't been turned on yet.

How do I make cardservices load earlier in the boot sequence so that I
don't have to manually restart networking?
