so use debian.  in debian, all those little things (like timezones, man
pages, log files) actually work correctly.

one of the things i hated about slackware and SLS was that the logging
sucked...even fixing syslogd.conf didn't help much because all the
programs were compiled to use brain-damaged facilities (e.g. nearly
everything logged to either daemon or mail) which makes it a bit
difficult to e.g. separate your mail logs from other junk.  RH was about
the same when i last worked seriously with it (it may have improved
since then...but my partner tells me it hasn't - she runs a RH5-based
firewall at work). this is one of the pet annoyances i have with most
unixes (incl freebsd and solaris) - the logging sucks.

it's the difference between a *system* and a random collection of stuff.
