like it or not, the distribution DOES matter.
programs and program versions are different, file locations (e.g. config
files) are different, libraries are different, problems are different,
answers to common problems are different, and the experiences of users
are different.
if someone wants a specific answer to a specific question then it is
in their best interests to provide as much relevant information as
possible.
e.g. "why don't my programs work" is a useless question. a better
version would be "i just upgraded from RH4 to RH5.0, and now none of my
libc5 programs work properly! help!" (the answer is "upgrade to RH5.1
where they fixed most of the libc5/libc6 conflict problems)
