That's because you mispaired the cable.
10baseT is so robust that I've seen it work over miswired cables that had no
DC connection, only the mispaired cables acting as a 1:1 transformer.
But when you negotiate up to 100baseTx the link stops working.

Here packets are being both sent and received without error.
