Jim, Thanks for pointing me to the .eve site. So the extension did turn out to be proprietary.
There are vector drawing facilities available for linux, and rather than run Eve with Wine, etc., it might be worth my trouble to create a set of vector drawings for one of the limux programs, and make them available. I'm only talking here about perhaps 2-3 dozen simple little electronic component symbols.
