You could have a first message approval policy; by this I mean, before I can send messages to the listserv, you would have to approve of my first one.
Sort of like packet filtering, but with e-mails.
Who is the "you" in this sentence? I aseume you mean the list owner, the only person in a position to do something like this.
If that is the case, you, John, and everyone here needs to understand that the lis owner, whoever he or she is, neglects this list. I doubt he or she reads its traffic or participates in any way in its activity. I already suggested the customary way to reach the list owner, but I doubt if that would accomplish anything either.
Beyond that ... do you (does anyone) know of mailing-list software that actually implements this idea? How well it would work in practice is not clear to me, but it is not a bad idea ... though the possibility of spoofing From: addresses restricts its usefulness. My impression is that the usual restriction method is to restrict posting to addresses that are signed up for the list ... also imperfect, but good enough to screen out a lot of the common SPAM styles.
