Or is it "MISSING OPEATING SYSTEM" which would appier as soon as your boot
prcedure starts, that would indicate that LILO has not been loaded, as
nothing was found by the bios on the /mbr.

Possably you have a misconfigured "Large Harddrive"
Quite often the bios "autodetect" will not use the "lba" option, this will
result in many problems after installing Linux, (yes) as silly as it seems
fdisk will see the disk and you will be able to partition it, howver booting
from it is a different story.

I had the same autodetect problem with a 4200mb disk.

One way into the disk would be with a "boot floppy".
Check the disk geometry shown by the bios, against what Linux "dmesg" says,
if it is different that could be your problem.
