Then possably "depmod -a" is not being run at boottime to create the
modules.dep file which needs to be located in /lib/modules/2.0.36.

A beter way to get to the bottom of the problem is for you to explain just
"HOW" you compiled your kernel, 
include all used commands in the order they are used,
include /usr/src/linux/.config 
What distribution of linux you have and its version number, 
include the output of dmesg, there is a file in some distributions called
dmesg and is found in /var/log or /var/adm.
Any relavant syslog messages created by kerneld or in any way concerned with
"modules".

It is possably a good idea NOT to send all that to the list, just a persanol
mail to me, or to anyone else who is interested in helping you, so he/she
should then request the information from you or me, this way we dont flood
others with what might look like garbage/bit_bucket_data to them.
