1. Yes, there is a Modem HowTo "out there"; look on the list at URL
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX-3.html#ss3.1 for a complete
list of HowTos and minis at the site.
2. /etc/fstab contains entries for filesystems, not modems, so I'm not sure
what your comment about not seeing an entry there means.
3. Are you sure you're using the right serial port? If you enter "setserial
/dev/modem", does the result report a UART type? If not, you're using the
wrong /dev entry (or you have a Winmodem [not windmodem], but you say this
isn't the case so I won't go into details on that part).
4. When you say you "confirmed the presence of an internal modem", do you
mean RH found it for you during installation or that you told RH it was
there? In either case, on what /dev entry? Is it possible that RH "found" a
serial port that isn't actually connected to a modem (this would account
nicely for the NO DIALTONE message, which I think comes from a startup
script, not the modem itself).
5. And what /dev is your mouse using (if it's a serial mouse)? What is the
result of "more /proc/interrupts"?
