Your question is posed a bit sketchily for us to offer much real help. From
what little you do say, it sounds like chat is not completing its script (if
pppd were active, chat should have trminated and not show in the ps list).
So I'll have to be pretty general.
1. Scripts to start ppp are usually short enough to post -- why don't you
send us a copy (being sure to remove password information) so we can see if
there's an obvious error (obvious to more experienced ppp users, I mean)?
2. Do you know that your modem works with your Linux setup? Does it work
with minicom, for example? If not, you need to go through the usual "how do
I get my modem to work" drill, which you've probably seen me and other walk
people through on this list many times.
3. Both pppd and chat will log errors, so why not take a look at your log
file (probably /var/spool/messages) to see what they say about any problems?
4. Except for hearing your modem dial (and whether that happens depends on
your modem configuration), a pppd activation does nothing obvious. So after
you run the script, check if you have a working pppd link. Several ways to
do this:
a. run ifconfig and see if a ppp0 interface is listed.
b. run "route -n" and see if a default ppp0 route is listed.
c. if you have an external modem, look at the LEDs and see if
they show a connection active.
d. try to use the interface; telnet somewhere, for example.
