Make sure that all your scripts are properly in place.

Test your modem by running minicom, and dial something with it... i.e.,

        ATDT5551212.

If you hear a dialtone, there's something wrong with your script.  If you
don't hear a dialtone, then your speaker is probably turned off... so do
this:

        ATM1

And try dialing again... that ought to fix your problem, and if it
doesn't... then make sure all connections are properly in place, etc....
