When you launch ppp, a lot of messages are logged to /var/log/messages
and can be logged to the console too.
[verify your /etc/syslog.conf file for that]. So if you are running some
kind of Xconsole, you should see messages like this:
1/ the chat commands ==>
waiting "CONNECT"
connect 54000 --> got it
so you see at what speed you modem is connected to the other end.
another command you can issue is "route" that should show you some route
to the internet
another command is "ifconfig" that should show you the ppp0 device with
its IP number.
or you could try to ping your ISP DNS server ...

I do not know how to do this yet, I take my queue from the minicom
connect prompts.
I still use Netscape (if the mail works i am in business) to check if my
ppp link is functioning.
Check around though there should be a way.
