I have installed linux (slackware 3.4) on a mighty packard-Hell 386
laptop wit 4mb ram and 90mb hd - including X. It's not something I
recommned, but it can be done. And it'll run a small X client, or an X
server, but not both at once. :-). The realistic minimum for X is 8mb
memory and a swap partition of at least 16mb (really, it's virtual
memory, not swap). More memory is better, of course.

170 mb is kinda not much, but most of the distro's have a live or
slaktest or so option so you can have most of your system files on the
cd, - at least the read-only ones. It's slow, and it ties up the cd so
you can't use it for anything else, and I've never tried it, but if
you're strapped for hd space, it might give you some breathing room.

Isn't science wonderful?
