Dial-in script for ppp

I have to login to my ISP's server several times
during the day and night to get my mail
This should happen in my absence.
I have made a cut and paste script from the ppp-howto to dial-in,
and another to cut the connection after 3 min
I have crontab call these dialup scripts
and I "do" get my mail.
BUT:
Sometimes the connections is not good and the script fails
Sometimes the line is busy and the script fails
Sometimes it just fails.
Have any of you got a script,
that will check for all the conditions and re-dial 3 times
if the connection is not established.
You know, a bit like Minicom
Suggestions are welcome.
