I had the same symptoms and resolved the problem by following the
clearly written statements in the 3rd edition of 'Red Hat Linux Secrets' on
PRINTERS. Although the printer would work in Print-Tool it would not print
a simple file with the command lpr filename.
Now in Print-Tool you click on your printer, therefore identifying it.
Using the simple- lpr filename -command, and the fact that Linux
can support many printers attached to the same parallel port, you have to
identify to Linux which particular printer your referring to. If you don't
include the name of the printer that is in the PRINTCAP configuration file
the default printer will be - lp .
Thus if you are entering the print command as above edit the PRINTCAP
file so the name of your printer is lp. Otherwise you will have
to include your printer name in your command statement
In my case I change the name in PRINTCAP from Panasonic (which I entered
as the printers name when configured the printer, to- lp -and now it
works like a charm.
I have found the RedHat books that came with the 6.0 package that I
bought extremely poor as references. May I suggest the above mentioned book
as a premium reference, it comes with v6.1 and the 2.2.11 kernel for 39.99
list, and also the Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed also at 39.99 list. I would
have been at a total loss if I depended solely on the Red Hat supplied books
alone.
