I've been trying to get people on this list to do exactly that for
ages. Personally, I think you are fighting a losing battle. You'll
get all kinds of reasons why people think Cc'ing a mailing list is
ok. such as...

        - "everyone else does it" (just because someone else does it
          does not make it right)

        - "when I hit 'reply' my mailer puts the original author in
'TO:' so I have to add the list address to Cc" (I'm sorry
folks, but your mailer is broken. Configure it so it
doesn't behave like this or get a mailer that will)

        - "nobody has ever complained before" (guess what amigo, we're
          complaining now)

        - "what's the big deal, just delete the duplicates" (believe
me, when you are averaging a couple of hundred emails a day
          it's a big deal)

        - "but the original author might want a quick response" (if
that's the case, they should say so in the post)

Now I know that nobody is going to take heed of what I've said so
here's some suggestions for those of us who think Cc'ing a mailing
list is bad...

        (1) Use procmail to delete duplicate mails
,----
| # Block duplicate messages that you receive when someone CCs you
| # on a reply to a mailing list that you are subscribed to.
| # Recipe by Steinar Bang [EMAIL PROTECTED] [970603]
| :0 Wh: msgid.lock
| | formail -D 65536 ${PMDIR}/cache/msgid.cache
`----

        (2) Use procmail to sort linux-newbie mail using TO_

,----
| :0
| * ^TO_linux-newbie
| ${MAILDIR}/newbie
`----

        (3) Add a "Mail-Copies-To: Nobody" header to your mailing list
posts. If the other person's MUA is worth anything it
            will honor this header.

        (4) Configure your MUA to *ONLY* send to the list address.
            Gnus does this well.

With all those things set, it's been a long while since I've seen a
duplicate post from linux-newbie (or any other mailing list for that
matter). And so I am at peace with my computer.
