I tried with 'biff n' in /etc/profile but there's no difference.
I don't have a .bash_profile yet; I suppose by creating one, I'll
be able to resurrect bash behavior I enjoyed in Redhat.

I think that Lawson might be on to something. I had implemented some
changes in /etc/syslog.conf which might explain the odd behavior, 
although I didn't see anything like that in Redhat. I am aware of the 
different messages which appear when either using fetchmail's verbose
option, or not; that's not what I see. I see the first 5 lines of the 
actual message, including subject line and sender!
