First, I commented out these lines in /etc/syslog.conf, which
I had added as per Lawson's advice:

local2.=info            /var/log/ppp
daemon.=info            rks

Then I went ahead and actually deleted them, but no joy. 
Hmm, this is becoming quite a mystery.

As per Richard's advice, I changed an option in /etc/profile from 
'biff y' to 'biff n' although I was a bit puzzled why that might be 
relevant, still no joy.

What I see, again on all of the consoles, is the first five lines 
of each message fetchmail is retrieving, whether or not I use
fetchmail's -v option, apparently as it is happening.

What I haven't done is re-booted the computer, or anything else 
which may be required to 'reset' anything; it is my understanding
that that shouldn't be necessary.
