: A number of us are having similar problems currently with
: 2.2.1? with many ide disks and SMP. It is probably worth
: sending linux-kernel a summary of your difficulty, as the
: topic is being discussed. What Alan would really like is
: if you could run 2.2.13pre11 without the raid code, and get a
: similar lockup... perhaps just by keying heavy disk activity
: on each disk at the same time.. at least this works for the
: many-ide-SMP lockups (something like dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/null
: count=500000 & running on each drive at the same time.
For what it's worth, this particular box is NOT running any IDE
drives. It has (4) 2.1gb SCSI drives on an aic78xx adapter.
The machine itself is an old HP Netserver LXe Pro with (2)
processors (only one running now, obviously) and 192MB of RAM.
I can't switch to 2.2.13pre11-non-RAID, because my root is a
RAID-5'd md on this particular machine. If I dropped RAID,
obviouslly, I'd have a useless machine. [smile]
: I appreciate this is a production box... the one I am having
: a problem is too. But these kinds of tests may help them resolve
: the problem... and then we'll all buy you a beer ;)
The machine's owner is of the dreaded client/friend variety,
so he's willing to let me tinker around occasionally. Anything
I can do to assist (I've posted some pretty detailed explanations
of the machine, and what my "plan of attack" was) I am willing to
do. I benefit every day from Linux and the Linux community, and
I am more then willing to do what I can to give back.
